[02] Commission approves Imetal's acquisition of English China Clays subject to conditions

The European Commission has decided to approve the acquisition of English China Clays plc (ECC) by Imetal S.A. subject to certain changes. The operation had an impact on the markets for fused silica, kaolin and certain refractory clays. The companies have addressed the Commission's concerns by undertaking to divest ECC's activities in fused silica, an Imetal kaolin plant in the US and Imetal's AGS subsidiary in France. They will also submit a structural solution to the problem arising from their simultaneous presence on both the market for molochite, a unique refractory clay, and the market for kiln furniture, whose manufacturers need molochite. This transaction was also subject to US anti-trust approval granted by the Department of Justice in close cooperation with the Commission.

[04] Christos Papoutsis welcomes the British Coal Research Programme initiative

European Commissioner for Energy, Christos Papoutsis, welcomes in a statement the British Government's and in particular Minister John Battle's Coal Research Programme initiative for the development of cleaner coal technologies. He further said : "This initiative is in the same vein as that of the European Union's Research and Technology Programmes, for example THERMIE in the 4th Framework programme which promotes clean electricity production and also that of the Key Action in the 5th Framework Programme where clean coal technologies are included. The objective of these new technologies is the radical cost reduction and improvement in the efficiency of coal use which will contribute substantially to more economic, cleaner and environmentally friendly measures for the 'dirtiest' fossil fuel. Having in consideration that potential near future markets for clean coal technologies would mainly be in third countries, the replacement in these countries of old technology coal power plants by advanced ones would extremely help environmental local and global objectives."
