[01] Jacques Santer désigne son nouveau Porte-Parole
Le Président de la Commission européenne, Jacques Santer, a désigné Mme
Martine Reicherts comme son nouveau Porte-Parole. Elle fera également
fonction comme Porte-Parole de la Commission européenne. Elle prend la
succession de Nikolaus van der Pas, Porte-Parole depuis janvier 1995, qui a
été nommé Chef de la Task Force pour les Négociations d'Adhésion. Mme
Reicherts, de nationalité luxembourgeoise, est actuellement Chef de Cabinet
adjoint du Président Santer. Elle prendra ses fonctions à partir du 23 mars
prochain. Précédemment, elle a exercé plusieurs fonctions à la Commission,
y compris celle de Chef de Cabinet adjoint du Commissaire luxembourgeois à
l'Agriculture, René Steichen. Sa succession au poste de Chef de Cabinet
adjoint du Président sera assurée par Mme Maria Pia Filippone, actuellement
Inspecteur Général des Services de la Commission.
[02] La Commission approuve la création d'une entreprise commune entre
Sanofi et Bristol-Myers Squibb
La Commission européenne a autorisé la création d'une entreprise commune
dans le secteur pharmaceutique entre la société française Sanofi et la
société américaine Bristol-Myers Squibb. Cette coopération a pour objet la
mise au point, la fabrication et la commercialisation de deux nouveaux
produits pharmaceutiques destinés à soigner certains troubles cardio-
vasculaires. Les activités des parties étant complémentaires et ne se
chevauchant que de façon marginale dans ces domaines, la Commission estime
que l'entreprise commune n'entraîne pas de restriction sensible de la
concurrence entre les parties. En outre, du fait de la structure
généralement concurrentielle des marchés concernés et de l'existence de
médicaments génériques de premier plan, l'entreprise commune ne devrait
avoir aucun effet restrictif notable sur l'activité d'entreprises tierces.
[03] Anita Gradin receives the 1998 Marisa Bellisario Prize "Woman of
Europe"
Anita Gradin, European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Justice, has, as
the first laureate, been awarded the 1998 Marisa Bellisario Prize "Woman of
Europe". The prize has been instituted this year to mark the strong
European commitment of its founders : Confindustria and the daily newspaper
Il Sole 24 Ore. Mrs Gradin will receive the award at a ceremony in Rome on
Saturday, March 21, in connection with a round table seminar on Women in
World Trade Industries. "I am very honoured to have been awarded this
prestigious prize, named after one of Italy's most prominent and well-known
women", Commissioner Gradin says. During the round table Mrs Gradin will
address the subject of women entrepreneurs and their specific problems.
She will also raise the issue of women and trade and the particular
possibilities and prospects that a new world trade arena holds for women
entrepreneurs.
[04] German journalist receives European Journalism Emanuele Gazzo Prize
German journalist Helmut Hetzel, President of the Dutch Press Association
and The Hague correspondent for various Benelux and Chinese newspapers,
received today, from the hands of European Commissioner for Culture,
Marcelino Oreja, the 1997 European Journalism Emanuele Gazzo Prize, awarded
by the Association of European Journalists (AEJ). The winner of the 1997
edition of the Prize was decided in October in Lisbon by an international
jury during the AEJ's XXXV International Congress. The award consists of a
diploma and an ECU 5,000 cash prize. Founded in 1963, the AEJ is made up
of some 2,000 members from 23 European countries. The AEJ is a non-profit
organisation gathering journalists convinced of the need for European
integration on a democratic basis and the freedom of the press.
[05] Franz Fischler : "Enlargement - a political necessity, a logical
consequence of history and a phenomenal bargain for the European Union"
Speaking to the audience of a Symposium organized by the Austrian
Broadcasting Station ORF yesterday evening, European Commissioner Franz
Fischler for Agriculture and Rural development pointed at the necessity of
enlargement to secure political stability in Europe. "To me as an Austrian
European the regathering of the Danube-countries potential is a logical
consequence of history", Mr Fischler remarked. Only a greater Europe can
enhance its weight on a global scale, in matters of foreign and security
policy as well as in establishing new standards in global competition.
Increasing the marketplace by up to 100 million consumers with a growing
demand for consumer goods could make enlargement for the current 15
European nations a "phenomenal bargain" as Mr Fischler quoted economist's
estimates. These sound predictions justify the proposed integration
supports of up to 2.7% of the applicant countries GNP. This amount
surpasses even the US-Marshall plan and will help to prepare the
administrations, economies and especially the agricultural sectors of the
applicant countries for entering the European Union (EU). Mr Fischler
described concerns regarding a wave of immigration and a flood of cheap
products of poor quality on to the european markets as unfounded. Such a
development would be avoided as the social and environmental standards of
the applicant countries will rise to EU levels during a phase of step-by-
step assimilation into Europe.
