  • [01] Commission launches 9 pilot projects for the electronic identification of animals (IDEA)

The European Commission is granting ECU 10 million towards the total cost of ECU 17 million for the implementation of nine pilot projects for the electronic identification of animals (IDEA) in six Member States (Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal). The IDEA is based on the use of a transponder implanted in the animal so as to allow effective monitoring of its location and movements by radio frequency. The projects will take place over three years and must be completed by 31 December 2000. The Commission shall at the end of this period decide on the possibility of introducing more general electronic identification arrangements in the light of the result of the pilot projects.

[03] High Level Group on tourism and employment

A High Level Group on tourism and employment has been set up with the mandate to examine the conditions in which tourism could make a greater contribution to growth and stability in employment in Europe and to make recommendations to the European Commission by October 1998. This Group was announced by Tourism Commissioner Christos Papoutsis last Saturday, 7 March 1998, in Berlin at the opening of the Internationale Tourismus Börse. It will consist of eighteen tourism entrepreneurs and experts of recognised competence from all Member States. The Group will have its first meeting on 24 March 1998 in Brussels.

[04] Europeans on Holiday - results of the first Eurobarometer Survey

More than half the citizens of the European Union's Member States have taken holidays in 1997. The forecasts for 1998 show that there will be an increase in departures and a longer stay in their destination for a third of European holiday-makers. Six out of ten Europeans stay in their own country for the longest holidays and when they are travelling abroad their main destination is another Member State, and the vast majority have not experienced problems, including in terms of personnal safety, during their holidays.
