[01] La Commission approuve la mise sur le marché de deux types de colza
génétiquement modifié
La Commission européenne a adopté deux décisions concernant la mise sur le
marché de colza oléagineux génétiquement modifié, notifié par la société
belge Plant Genetic Systems (PGS). En ce qui concerne l'étiquetage, PGS a
spontanément proposé d'indiquer sur les sacs de graines de colza que les
semences ont été améliorées par modification génétique. Il sera également
précisé que, du fait de la modification génétigue originale, des exigences
spécifiques d'étiquetage pourront être applicables aux produits récoltés.
La société a également pris l'initiative d'informer les importateurs de
colza dans l'Union européenne sur les modifications génétiques subies par
ce produit.
[02] Accord entre l'Union européenne et la Confédération suisse sur
l'assistance administrative mutuelle en matière douanière
L'Union européenne (UE) et la Confédération suisse ont signé aujourd'hui à
Luxembourg un accord sur l'assistance administrative mutuelle en matière
douanière. Cet accord, qui complète l'Accord de libre échange du 22
juillet 1972 par un protocole spécifique, fournit aux autorités compétentes
de l'UE et de la Suisse une base juridique pour échanger des informations
relatives à la prévention et à la poursuite de fraudes et d'irrégularités
douanières dans leurs territoires respectifs. L'accord couvre tout domaine
douanier, y compris le transit, où l'UE et la Suisse sont des partenaires
dans les procédures de transit commun et du TIR.
[03] EU-Japan Summit, The Hague, 25 June
The sixth annual European Union (EU) - Japan Summit will be held in The
Hague on 25 June, between the Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto,
and the President of the European Council, Prime Minister Wim Kok and the
President of the European Commission Jacques Santer. The Japanese Foreign
Minister Yukihido Ikeda, the President of the Council Hans Van Mierlo and
the Vice-President of the Commission Sir Leon Brittan will also attend. In
the Declaration of The Hague (1991), the EU and Japan agreed to further
intensify political and economic relations and to meet annually at the
highest level. At the upcoming Summit, partners will amongst others
exchange views on recent developments in the EU and Japan, their bilateral
relations, developments in the world trading system, ASEM, and other
relevant international issues.
[04] Nicaragua: la Commission approuve l'octroi d'une aide médicale de 2,8
millions d'Ecus
La Commission européenne a approuvé l'octroi d'une aide médicale d'urgence
de 2,8 millions d'Ecus au Nicaragua. L'aide, gérée par l'Office
humanitaire de la Communauté européenne (ECHO), permettra à des
organisations non gouvernementales européennes de réaliser un programme de
neuf mois pour lutter contre diverses épidémies.
[05] Padraig Flynn: "Social protection is not a source of economic weakness
but the driving force behind high levels of productivity and
competitiveness"
(!!! embargo 2 pm !!!) Speaking today in Brussels at a seminar on
"Modernising and improving social protection," Employment and Social
Affairs Commissioner, Padraig Flynn, said that "our social protection
systems are one of the real achievements of post-war Europe, but they must
be modernised and improved if they are to continue to serve us." Mr Flynn
outlined the key elements of the Commission's recent communication on this
subject and pointed out that unemployment was only one of the new
challenges with which social protection systems must contend. There is
also the ageing of the population, the shifting gender balance and the much
greater extent to which workers now move around the Union. (!!! embargo 2
pm !!!)
