[01] Commission welcomes moves by East European Governments to lift
Balance of Payments restrictions
At the end of the summer round of balance of payments consultations within the
World Trade Organisation (WTO), the European Commission has welcomed
moves by some East European governments to lift trade restrictions that have
been in place for some years on balance of payments grounds. Following a
unanimous call from the WTO, the Slovak government has agreed to abolish its
imports surcharge at the end of 1996. This follows a similar undertaking from
Poland. The Commission has called on other nations such as India and Brazil
to ease their restrictions.
[02] 73,64 millions d'Ecus pour la reconversion des bassins sidérurgiques en
Espagne
La Commission a approuvé une aide du Fonds Européen de Développement
Régional (FEDER) pour un montant de 73,64 millions d'Ecus en faveur de la
reconversion économique de régions sidérurgiques en Espagne. En beneficient
les régions des Asturias, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, Navarra et
Pais Vasco. L'investissement total prévu, incluant les investissements publics et
privés, s'élève à 464 millions d'Ecus. Le programme, qui fait partie de l'Initiative
Communautaire RESIDER, se déroulera jusqu'à fin 1999.
[03] The Commission supports conversion of arms industry regions in Sweden
Sweden is to receive ECU 3.3 million from the EU's Structural Funds to support
the economic diversification of regions heavily dependent on the defence
industry. The aid comes under the Community Initiative KONVER and goes to the
Karlskoga municipality in the country of Örebro and the Karlsborg municipality in
the country of Skaraborg. It is matched by investments of ECU 3.3 million from
the Swedish authorities and investments of ECU 4.7 million from the private
sector. Altogether, the programme contributes to the creation of approximately
350 new jobs, the creation of around 40 now companies and the training of some
300 people. The programme will run until end-1999.
[04] EU/ECU 17 million for SMEs in Sweden
The European Commission has made available ECU 17 million from the EU's
Structural Funds to strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) in the sparsely populated, rural and declining industrial areas
in Sweden. The aid comes under the Commission Initiative SME and is matched
by funding of ECU 17 million from the Swedish authorities. This is expected to
trigger a contribution of around ECU 14 million from the private sector to give an
estimated total investment of ECU 48 million. The actions funded are expected
to contribute to the creation of some 5,200 new jobs, the training of around
20,000 people employed in SMEs, a sales increase of about 20% for 4,600
companies and access to new markets for another 3,000 companies.
[05] Le Portugal reçoit 53,5 millions d'Ecus pour la protection de
l'environnement
La Commission Européenne a approuvé une aide de 53.5 millions d'Ecus
émanant du Fonds de Cohésion pour la protection de l'environnement en
Portugal. En bénéficient huit projets présentés par les autorités portugais, soit
deux projets d'assainissement des bassins Sesimbra et du Grand Porto/Sud,
quatre projets concernant le traitement et la collecte des eaux résiduaires, le
Dragage du Ria de Aveiro ainsi qu'une série des études et projets relatifs au
réseau régional de collecte sélective, de tri et de traitement des résidus solides
urbains de l'Algarve. Pour chaque programme, le taux d'aide émanant du Fonds
de Cohésion s'élève à 85% de la dépense publique.
[06] Infraction - Grèce: restrictions concernant des investissements et le
transfert physique des fonds à l'étranger
La Commission a décidé l'envoi à la Grèce d'un avis motivé en matière de
mouvements des capitaux. L'avis motivé est la deuxième étape d'une procédure
d'infraction en vertu de l'Article 169 du Traité CE.
[07] LES ATHLÈTES HANDICAPES EUROPEENS EN ROUTE POUR LES JEUX
PARALYMPIQUES D'ATLANTA
Plus d'un tiers des athlètes handicapés participant aux 10èmes jeux
Paralympiques d'Atlanta, qui se dérouleront entre les 15 et 25 août 1996,
bénéficient d'une aide financière de l'Union européenne. Celle-ci a en effet
accordé 350.000 écus au Comité Paralympique International. Quatre vingts pour
cent de cette contribution seront répartis entre les athlètes handicapés européens
par leur comité paralympique national. Les autres 20 % couvriront une partie des
frais du Mouvement International Paralympique. Les athlètes provenant des pays
de l'Union européenne sont au nombre de 1138. Ils participeront à 600
différentes compétitions regroupant 17 disciplines sportives .
