[01] Financial services: meeting consumers' expectations - Commission adopts Green Paper

A Green Paper aimed at ensuring consumers get a fair deal from financial services within the Single Market has just been adopted by the European Commission. The Green Paper seeks to identify consumers' requirements and preoccupations in the field of financial services (banking, insurance, securities trading), particularly when these services are sold at a distance. On the basis of the debate generated by the Green Paper and the responses received, the Commission will assess whether consumers' needs are met adequately by existing legislation and what further initiatives may be needed. Interested parties are invited to submit their comments on the Green Paper by 15 October 1996.

[02] Commission adopts a proposal designed to ensure the safety of UK gelatin, tallow and semen with a view to lifting the ban on these products

The Commission today adopted a proposal with a view to partially lifting the ban on British beef products. The proposal specifies new improved processing techniques to be applied in the UK to gelatin and tallow obtained from bovine animals slaughtered in the UK to eliminate any potential risk from BSE. The proposal detailing the necessary measures and controls will be put to the Council of Agriculture Ministers on 3/4 June for a decision. Once those measures are put into action the Commission considers that it would no longer be necessary to maintain the export ban on these products. These proposed measures fully respect the recommendations of the World Health Organisation which were subsequently endorsed by the EU's Scientific Veterinary Committee.

[II] Other news - Autres nouvelles

[03] The Commission approves a joint venture between Thomson S.A. and Daimler-Benz AG

The Commission has approved a joint venture between Thomson S.A. and Daimler-Benz AG in the field of Gallium Arsenide based microwave components. Thomson S.A. is a holding company, majority owned by the French state, mainly active in the fields of consumer electronic products and electronics for industrial applications and defence systems. Daimler-Benz AG is a holding company mainly active in vehicles for passengers and freight transportation, rail systems, aerospace, propulsion systems, defense systems, automation, energy systems technology and information-technology services.

[04] The Commission clears a concentration in the British Railways sector

The Commission has approved a concentration by which the French undertaking Compagnie Générale d'Entreprises Automobiles (CGEA) belonging to the Groupe Général des Eaux acquires the British company Network South Central Limited (NSC) which provides passenger rail services in the south of England.
