  • [01] Fisheries: stocks are overexploited, fishing effort must be reduced

The Group of Independent Experts convened by the Commission to evaluate the state of the fisheries stocks exploited by the European fleets has concluded its work. The overall picture from the report is clear: fish stocks throughout European Union waters are overexploited and significant reductions in fishing effort are required to remedy this situation. A large proportion of the stocks in all areas are exploited at levels of fishing mortality higher, and sometimes far higher, than the maximum that would allow a rational and sustainable fishery. Fishing mortality must be reduced on these stocks as a matter of great urgency. Even for the stocks which could, in principle, sustain current exploitation levels there would be significant gains to be made by reducing fishing mortality further in all but a very small number cases. The group advocates a progressive approach in which significant but not extreme reductions in effort are accompanied by a continuous monitoring of the state of the stocks.
