[03] Veterinary legislation on products of animal origin

At a Conference in Brussels today, Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Franz Fischler, launched an exercise on the simplification of veterinary legislation on products of animal origin. The EU legislation which exists in this area has been developed over the last 30 years and in total amounts to about 650 pages of legislation. It is Mr Fischler's intention following consultation with interested parties to draw up a simple and comprehensive set of rules which are on the one hand easily understood and at the same time ensure that the present high level of human and animal health protection is maintained.

[05] Commission approves a joint venture between GEC Alsthom and Tarmac

The Commission has approved the creation of GT Railway Maintenance Ltd., a joint venture between GEC Alsthom and Tarmac Construction. GEC Alsthom Ltd, is a subsidiary of a joint venture between GEC plc and Alcatel Alsthom GCE, and Tarmac Construction Ltd is a subsidiary of Tarmac plc.

[08] Yves-Thibault de Silguy: "ERM participation would bring Finland clear benefits" !!! embargo 14h !!!

Speaking to the Finnish Chambers of Commerce in Helsinki, Mr de Silguy said that "Finland is one of the better pupils in the European class. It is well equipped to participate fully in the European Monetary System." The initiative to join must come from the Finnish authorities. However, he continued "One of the criteria for participation in the euro states, the durability of convergence achieved by the Member State and of its participation in the exchange-rate mechanism of the EMS". "I am sure that Finland has the capacity to be among the countries introducing the single currency in 1999". !!! embargo 14h !!!

[09] Ritt Bjerregaard in Hungary: Environmental "acquis communautaire" will have to be taken over

    !!! embargo 15h30 !!!

In a speech to the Hungarian Environment Council in Budapest, Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard welcomed the efforts pursued by Hungary to become member of the Union. She reminded the main implication of each enlargement, namely that a new member has to take over the "acquis communautaire". Therefore, Hungary should not wait for the transitional period to start taking over EU environmental legislation. "We should be honest from the very beginning, in order not to create misunderstandings or pursue illusions in this respect. Candidates for accession have to prove their readiness not only in political and economic terms but also in performing well on environmental protection matters. (...) It is Hungary's own responsibility to prepare its strategies and action programmes for the approximation of legislation. And it is the European Union's responsibility to assist Hungary in this task", the Commissioner stressed. !!! embargo 15h30 !!!
