  • [01] EU clears Itafinco deal

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared a deal under which French bank Caisse National du Credit Agricole, Banco Ambrosiano Veneto Spa and Banque Sofinco take joint control of Italian consumer credit company Agos Itafinco.

    [02] Van Miert/Boeing

    BRUSSELS - European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert stepped up pressure on Boeing Co on Tuesday saying he would not accept the proposed merger with McDonnell Douglas Corp as it currently stands.

    [03] New controls on biocides

    BRUSSELS - The European Parliament approved on Tuesday plans to introduce EU- wide rules controlling the sale in the single market of biocides like insecticides, fungicides and wood preservatives.

    [04] Pollution controls on farm machines

    BRUSSELS - Tractor and combine harvester manufacturers will in future have to abide by stricter limits on pollutant emissions, following the European Parliament's approval on Tuesday of new European Union rules.

    [05] Allied may appeal over mega-merger

    LONDON - Sir Christopher Hogg, chairman of drinks to pub group Allied Domecq, said on Tuesday the company would appeal to regulatory authorities over a planned 20 billion pound merger between Grand Metropolitan Plc and Guinness if it's in shareholders interests.

    [06] No change on Euro-defence

    PARIS - Britain's new Labour government signalled on Tuesday it would oppose any moves to bring defence under the wing of the European Union -- echoing the views of the previous Conservative administration.

    [07] EU/WTO on Indonesian car policy

    GENEVA - The European Union will next week ask fellow members of the World Trade Organisation to agree to set up a panel to look into Indonesia's controversial national car policy, trade diplomats said on Tuesday.

    [08] EU/WTO/Brazil car tariffs

    GENEVA - The European Union has started a case in the World Trade Organisation against Brazil's tariff system for imported cars which Brussels says violate open trading rules, trade diplomats said on Tuesday.

    [09] Russia-NATO deal

    MOSCOW - Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov and NATO Secretary General Javier Solana met on Tuesday to try and hammer out a pact on relations between Moscow and the Western alliance just two weeks before its planned signing.

    [10] Main EU events for May 14

    STRASBOURG - European Commission regular weekly meeting begins at 1300 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - EU research ministers meeting begins at 0800 GMT (first of two days).

    STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0700 GMT (third of five days). Commissioner Bonino presents European Commission's communication on food safety to the BSE follow-up committee.
