    THE HAGUE - European Union ministers agreed on Saturday to step up cooperation to clamp down on the sex slave trade in women which forces hundreds of thousands into prostitution in the bloc every year.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union is considering breaking off high-level meetings with Iran and excluding top Iranian officials from its borders, according to a proposal to be discussed by EU foreign ministers next week.

    THE HAGUE - Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok said on Saturday a sudden rash of elections in the European Union had not swayed his determination to get an accord on a new draft treaty at the EU's June summit in Amsterdam.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had granted a three-year exemption from EU competition rules to two liner shipping agreements operating between ports in northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

    BRUSSELS - The EFTA Surveillance Authority said on Friday it has ruled against anti-competitive practices in the Norwegian forestry sector, deciding that they must stop.

    BRUSSELS - EU Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler has recalled negotiators from Washington because of lack of progress in settling a trade dispute over meat inspection rules, a Commission spokesman said on Friday.

    [07] EU casts doubt on British BSE plan

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cast doubt on a British proposal for easing a ban on British exports of beef imposed because of fears over mad cow disease, an aide to EU Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Friday.

    [08] Main EU events for April 28

    LUXEMBOURG - EU justice and home affairs ministers meeting begins at 1230 GMT; discussions focus on a report on organised crime to be presented to the Amsterdam European Council (Monday).

    THE HAGUE - Dutch Social and Economic Council forum on "The future of the social dialogue at Community level" begins at 1230 GMT (first of two days). Social and Economic Council President Klaas de Vries holds press briefing, Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok addresses the conference participants at dinner.

    BRUSSELS - Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin holds news conference on the outcome of his meeting at NATO at 1030 GMT.
