    NOORDWIJK, Netherlands - The European Union and Latin America on Tuesday pledged to forge closer relations, aiming for increased trade and planning a first summit before the end of the century.

    NOORDWIJK, Netherlands - The European Union on Tuesday extended trade privileges granted to five Andean nations and said greater effort would be made to increase European investment in the region.

    NOORDWIJK, Netherlands - Cuban leader Fidel Castro will be invited to attend a first European Union/Latin America summit scheduled to take place in either Panama or Brazil in the next 18 months, EU officials said on Tuesday.

    MAASTRICHT, the Netherlands - EU culture ministers and the European Commission were at odds on Tuesday over whether cross-border agreements on book pricing should be allowed to continue.

    MAASTRICHT, the Netherlands - - European Union culture ministers came out on Tuesday in favour of attaching a protocol on the need for public service broadcasting to the EU treaty under revision in the inter-governmental conference.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Tuesday announced a deal with Moscow that will allow Russia gradually to increase its steel exports to the European Union to the end of 2001, when free trade will be introduced.

    BRUSSELS - Draft EU rules on fuel quality and engine emission standards are likely to come under fire for being too weak on Wednesday, when the European Parliament debates its response to European Commission proposals.

    STRASBOURG - The European Parliament on Tuesday criticised Britain and several other European Union countries for violating human rights.

    STRASBOURG - The European Commission is to propose the withdrawal of export aid to animal exporters who do not respect European rules on the welfare of live animals in transport, EU farm commissioner Franz Fischler said on Tuesday.

    STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0700 GMT (third of five days). Debates on "auto oil" programme on car pollution, Middle East peace process, Council and Commission statements on Albania and Hong Kong.

    STRASBOURG - European Commission regular weekly meeting begins at 0700 GMT; Commissioner Cresson holds news conference at 1000 GMT on the fifth framework programme for research and technological development; Commissioner Kinnock holds news conference at 1030 GMT on 1997-2001 programme to promote road safety in the EU.

    BRUSSELS - European Commission holds news conference on the outcome of the G- 24 meeting on Bulgaria at 1100 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - European Commissioner Brittan meets Norwegian Foreign Minister Bjoern Tore Godal and Fisheries Minister Karl Eirik Schuett-Pedersen at 0730 GMT. Discussions focus on the Commission's ongoing anti-subsidy and anti- dumping proceedings concerning imports of Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon - followed by a news conference at 0815 GMT.
