[01] EMU woes may gatecrash EU summit
BRUSSELS - Europe's white-knuckle ride towards monetary union threatens to
spill over into a European Union summit in Amsterdam in two weeks.
[02] EMU prospects' critical period
BRUSSELS - Although Germany's internal row over the Bundesbank's gold reserves
appears to have been defused, Europe's planned single currency still faces an
uncertain future with several formidable hurdles ahead.
[03] Waigel sees common way with Buba
BONN - German Finance Minister Theo Waigel said on Wednesday he and the
Bundesbank had agreed on a common approach to revalue assets to help Bonn's
drive to join the European single currency but gave parliament few details.

LONDON - British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown said on Wednesday
that the new Labour government's position on a single European currency had
not changed.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, seeking to boost growth and jobs, proposed
on Wednesday an ambitious three-stage plan to complete the European Union's
single market in time for the launch of monetary union.
[06] Swedish EMU opt-out/Santer
BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Wednesday it
would be up to European Union leaders to decide whether Sweden could opt out
of economic and monetary union if it qualified.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is extremely reluctant to step into a
dispute between German private and state banks, but will almost certainly do
so if Chancellor Helmut Kohl fails to shield the public Landesbanken
altogether from EU competition rules.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission warned national governments on Wednesday
they must not discriminate against foreign investors in privatisation
programmes.
[09] ECOFIN to meet on EMU on Sunday
BRUSSELS - European Union finance ministers will meet for an unusual session
on Sunday evening in Luxembourg to discuss economic and monetary union, an EU
diplomat said on Wednesday.
[10] EU worker consultation rules
BRUSSELS - Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn called on Wednesday for
European Union rules which would oblige companies in the EU to set up systems
at national level for consulting their workers on major decisions.
[11] UK green rate to revalue
BRUSSELS - The British green rate will revalue on Thursday to 0.720829 per
ecu, from 0.742320 per ecu, the European Commission said.
[12] Mannesmann/Vallourec deal cleared
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had cleared the
acquisition by Mannesmann Roehren Werke of a 21-percent stake in France's
Vallourec and creation of a seamless tubes venture between the two steel
firms.

PARIS - France's new Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin brought Communists
and Greens into a young, broad-left government on Wednesday, giving a major
role to women as the defeated Gaullists wallowed in recrimination.

LUXEMBOURG - EU health ministers meet (0800 GMT); main discussions focus on
fight against tobacco consumption, blood safety and report on women's health.
LUXEMBOURG - EU development ministers meet (0800 GMT); main discussions focus
on future relations between the European Union and African, Caribbean and
Pacific countries, support for indigenous peoples and financing of non-
governmental organisations.
