[01] French election fears played down
LUXEMBOURG - European Union foreign ministers sought on Monday to play down
fears that the sweeping election victory by French Socialists could delay the
single currency and a new EU treaty.
[02] No EU envoys back to Iran yet
LUXEMBOURG - European Union foreign ministers decided on Monday that the time
was not yet right for members of the 15-nation bloc to send their ambassadors
back to Iran.
[03] EU warns Zaire on human rights
LUXEMBOURG - European Union foreign ministers expressed concern on Monday over
reports of human rights abuses in Zaire, and warned the bloc would keep close
tabs on the country's progress towards democracy.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Union on Monday extended for a further six months
restrictions on contact with Nigerian officials, saying not enough progress
had been made in ending human rights abuses.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Union's new observatory on racism and xenophobia
will be based in Vienna, the bloc's foreign ministers agreed on Monday.

BRUSSELS - France's lurch to the political left has raised profound doubts
over the willingness of European leaders to push ahead with a single currency
and fuelled speculation that a delay might realistically be considered.

BRUSSELS - The European Union, the world's biggest agricultural producer, must
learn to export without the aid of subsidies if it is to share in expanding
world markets, Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Monday.
[08] Portugal's olive subsidy plan
LISBON - Portugal said on Monday it rejected a European Union plan to reform
subsidies for olive farmers because the proposal would destroy production.
[09] UK identifies new "mad cow" cases
LONDON - Britain's Health Ministry said on Monday it had identified 17
probable and definite cases of a new type of the brain-wasting Creutzfeldt-
Jakob disease that has been linked with mad cow disease.
[10] Dutch ban pig breeding
THE HAGUE - The Dutch farm ministry said on Monday it intended to impose a ban
on pig breeding in an area at the heart of a swine fever outbreak in the south
of the country.
[11] EU tobacco criticism rejected
BRUSSELS - European Union tobacco manufacturers, retailers and workers on
Monday vigorously rejected criticism by the European Union's top health
official, saying that price cutting was the only way to raise sales.
[12] Subsidies to swollen fleets
GENEVA - A leading environmentalist group accused rich fishing states led by
the European Union on Monday of plundering the already declining fish stocks
of the developing world with their swollen, subsidised fleets.
