    LUXEMBOURG - The European Union said on Monday it was prepared to strengthen the powers of its Europol police agency so it could more effectively combat organised crime running rampant across its free borders.

    HAMBURG, Germany - Dutch Foreign Minister Hans van Mierlo said on Monday he believed European Union members would agree on including a clause on unemployment in the revision of the EU treaty to be agreed in Amsterdam in June.

    BRUSSELS - European Union countries are expected to send their ambassadors back to Iran this week, a fortnight after a German court found Tehran involved in the murder of Kurdish opposition leaders.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had discussed aviation subsidy rules with the United States but denied the talks had anything to do with its anti-trust probe into merger plans by U.S. aircraft maker Boeing Co.

    BRUSSELS - The EU Telecommunications Council scheduled for May 29 has been postponed for lack of a substantive agenda, the Dutch EU presidency said on Monday.
