[01] EU dispute with Turkey/Kinkel
ANKARA - Visiting German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel on Wednesday hit back
at Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan for a perceived slight on the
European Union.
[02] Turkey not ruled out of Europe
ANKARA - German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel traded barbs with Turkey's
Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan on Wednesday but assured Ankara it
still had a place in the European family.
[03] French northern border controls
PARIS - President Jacques Chirac reiterated on Wednesday France would not "for
the time being" give up its right to maintain controls at its northern borders
despite the Schengen pact easing movement across European frontiers.
[04] Belgium safely on track for EMU
BRUSSELS - Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene said on Tuesday revisions
to the 1997 budget agreed last weekend guaranteed Belgium a place in a single
European currency from the start.

BRUSSELS - The European Union announced on Wednesday several decisions which
affect the budgetary treatment of deep-discounted and index-linked government
bonds ahead of economic and monetary union.
[06] EU-Japan agreement on car exports
BRUSSELS - The European Union and Japan have agreed that Tokyo can ship
1,092,000 cars to the EU in 1997, virtually unchanged from last year's limit,
the European Commission said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had requested formal
consultations with Japan at the World Trade Organisation because Tokyo had
excluded European companies from a global satellite navigation system
contract.
[08] Infotech trade tariffs agreement
GENEVA - A total of 39 countries on Wednesday agreed on a $500 billion global
pact to scrap tariffs in the booming information technology trade by the year
2000, WTO chief Renato Ruggiero told reporters.
[09] US ratification of ship aid deal
BRUSSELS - EU Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert, reacting angrily to
U.S. criticism of plans to allow aid to EU shipyards, urged the United States
on Wednesday to ratify an OECD deal to cut support to the sector.
[10] Beef label decision/Council
BRUSSELS - The European Commission has decided to take the European Union's
Council of Ministers to court because it refused to give the European
Parliament a role in deciding on beef labelling, a spokesman said on
Wednesday.
[11] Poultry import regime solution
WASHINGTON - The European Union has offered the United States a "temporary
solution" for poultry import standards until a long-term solution can be
worked out, a senior EU official said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - European Union beef export refunds were cut by 7.5 percent from
midnight on Tuesday, European Commission spokesman Gerard Kiely said on
Wednesday.

DAKAR - Senegal and the European Union initialled a new fishing deal on
Wednesday, extending the life of the agreement for another four years.

ROME - An advance team of European experts left Rome for Tirana on Wednesday
to assess the scale of a planned multinational relief operation in troubled
Albania.
