    APELDOORN, Netherlands - The European Union shied away from sending troops into Albania on Sunday, settling for an offer of expert military and police advisers to try and help restore order in the anarchic Balkan state.

    [02] EU seek to reassure Turkey

    APELDOORN - European Union foreign ministers distanced themselves from some of their own leaders on Sunday, reassuring Turkey that it could one day qualify for membership in the European club.

    [03] EU/enlargement plan

    APELDOORN - The European Union, maintaining a firm distance from NATO's own expansion plans, stressed on Sunday that countries left out of its first enlargement wave would not be excluded from the European family.

    [04] UIP/EU/pay-TV film rights

    BRUSSELS - UIP, Hollywood's distribution arm, said on Friday it had settled a dispute with the European Commission over the licensing of pay-television film rights in the European Union.

    BERGEN, Norway - EU commissioners and ministers of fisheries and environment of North Sea states agreed on Friday on a set of recommendations to save North Sea fish stocks threatened with collapse because of overfishing.

    [06] Tighter rules on business closures

    ROTTERDAM - The social affairs ministers of the 15 European Union member countries called for a clear code of conduct governing business closures in a statement released on Sunday.

    BRUSSELS - EU finance ministers meeting begins at 0900 GMT; discussions focus on preparations for monetary union, including French and German economic convergence plans.

    BRUSSELS - EU farm ministers meeting begins at 1400 GMT (first of two or three days); discussions focus on a beef identification and registration system.

    BRUSSELS - European Commission President Santer and Commissioner de Deus Pinheiro meet Madagascar President Didier Ratsiraka.

    BRUSSELS - European Commissioner Bonino and MEP Elisabeth Guigou hold joint news conference on the screening of the film "Euro and children" at 1415 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - European Parliament and deputies from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries joint assembly begins at 1330 GMT (first of two days). European Parliament President Jose Maria Gil-Robles gives opening address. European Commissioner de Deus Pinheiro meets Fiji Isles Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabouka, Dutch Development Minister Jan Pronk.
