[01] EMU delay talk gathers momentum
BRUSSELS - Speculation on a delay in launching Europe's planned single
currency grew on Monday after doubts over the economic readiness of countries
to join in 1999 emanated from both Germany and Italy.
[02] Major ready to vote against EMU
LONDON - Prime Minister John Major said on Monday he would be prepared to vote
against other European Union countries joining a single currency if they
proposed to do so without being ready.
[03] France slams Commission
PARIS - France on Monday slammed the European Commission's proposals for
reforming itself and said negotiations on reform of European Union
institutions should be concluded at a June summit even if that meant sparking
a crisis.
[04] Final decision on media directive
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is unlikely to adopt finally the draft
media concentration directive when it meets on Wednesday, a Commission
spokeswoman said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The Council of Ministers and European Parliament are set to launch
the conciliation procedure on revisions to the draft television without
frontiers directive, EU officials said on Monday.
[06] Pressure to reduce BSE risk
BRUSSELS - The European Commission will discuss shortly with EU member states
ways to reduce the risk of mad cow disease and to improve detection methods, a
Commission spokesman said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - Agreement in principle has been reached on new animal feed
labelling rules that eliminate the "animal proteins" category, a European
Commission official recently told the EU feeding stuffs advisory committee.

BRUSSELS - France looks likely to face defeat on Tuesday in its efforts to
persuade the European Transport Council to back its plan to scrap the twice-
yearly adjustment of clocks.
[09] Japan/Korea's D-RAM chips prices
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it was reintroducing minimum
prices on D-RAM computer chips originating in Japan and Korea with immediate
effect.
[10] EU may clear BT/MCI deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is ready to clear the merger between
British Telecommunications Plc and MCI Communications Corp of the United
States if the companies confirm proposed "remedies to competition problems",
European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Monday.
[11] Sony/Time Warner radio deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is seeking comments on a European digital
pay-radio business operated by Sony Digital Radio Europe Ltd, which is
ultimately owned by Japan's Sony Corp, and Time Warner MCE Holdings Ltd.
[12] EU to reopen probe into GAN aid
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to start a new probe on
Wednesday into France's additional measures to help loss-making insurance
group Groupe des Assurances de Paris.

GENEVA - European Union commissioner Emma Bonino said on Monday it was
essential for the EU to have a common foreign policy decided by majority vote
to be able to deal properly with international crises.

DAMASCUS - The European Union's Middle East envoy Miguel Angel Moratinos has
presented Syria with a formula to revive Damascus's peace talks with Israel
which broke off a year ago, officials said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - EU transport ministers meeting begins at 0900 GMT (first of two
days); discussions focus on proposal to modify rules on lorry cab tachographs
and harmonisation of summertime rules for changing clocks.
STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0800 GMT (second of
five days); European Commission declarations on genetic cloning and the
closing of the Renault factory in Belgium at 0800 GMT.
