    BRUSSELS - The European Union on Friday bolstered Italy's hopes of a timely entry into a single currency by approving its controversial euro-tax, a one- off measure aimed at bringing its public finances under control in 1997.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared Telia AB and Ericsson to take joint control of AU-System Group, a previously wholly owned subsidiary of state-owned Telia.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared a deal under which Dutch company Vendex International NV acquires control of France's Bis SA.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Friday approved the acquisition by Archer-Daniels-Midland of Grace Cocoa Associates' activities.

    PARIS - A French state rescue package to prepare state-controlled bank Credit Lyonnais for privatisation will not be submitted for approval to the European Commission until late March, a Finance Ministry source said on Friday.

    LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice upholds a Court of First Instance ruling which denied an individual the right to force the European Commission to find a member state in violation of the EU Treaty.

    LONDON - Britain will host the 1998 Group of Seven summit in the central English city of Birmingham, Prime Minister John Major said on Saturday.

    BRUSSELS - EU foreign ministers meeting begins at 0830 GMT (first of two days); discussions focus on Mediterranean policy, Cyprus, South Africa, trapping standards; 10th inter-governmental conference meets on the margin of the Council at 1430 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat signs EU-Palestinian Authority interim association accord with EU at 1130 GMT - followed by a news conference; meets European Commission President Santer and Commissioner Marin at 1400 GMT.
