    THE HAGUE - British Prime Minister John Major will visit The Hague on Tuesday for informal talks on Europe with his Dutch counterpart Wim Kok, the Dutch government said on Monday.

    THE HAGUE - Several European Union countries would be "wise" to take their time in qualifying for the planned EU single currency to ensure they can sustain their budget deficit to GDP ratios, Dutch Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm said on Monday.

    THE HAGUE - The Netherlands believes it may be possible to lift the worldwide ban on British beef for cattle from Northern Ireland during the next six months, the Dutch farm ministry's spokesman said on Monday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission, under pressure from European Union telecommunication firms, is drafting a proposal to force non-EU phone rivals to charge VAT for services offered in Europe.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it was starting a routine probe into the proposed acquisition of Magna Automotive Holding GmbH by TRW Inc of the United States.

    MOSCOW - President Boris Yeltsin and other Russian leaders confirmed their opposition to NATO's plans to expand eastwards at a top-level meeting on Monday, the Kremlin said.
