    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers gave a cautious welcome on Tuesday to Britain's decision to slaughter 100,000 extra cattle, but warned it could be a long haul before a worldwide ban on British beef exports was lifted.

    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers agreed on Tuesday to improve the diet of young cows and to ban by 2006 the use of cramped crates for rearing calves over two months old, EU officials said.
