DUBLIN - European finance ministers on Friday agreed key elements of a deal to
ensure sound budget policies under a single European Union currency, but left
crucial unresolved details to be decided by EU leaders later in the day).

compromise deal for renewed talks with Switzerland and agreement on a series

for an agreement on the mutual recognition of veterinary standards on December
18, an Irish EU presidency official said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had cleared the merger
of the British cable TV interests of Videotron Holdings, Cable & Wireless Plc,
Nynex Corp and BCE with those of Mercury Communications.

PARIS - The head of the European Union's future central bank said on Thursday
that the parities between Europe's major currencies, including the franc and
the mark, were now correct.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament on Thursday adopted its position on future
enlargement of the European Union, urging the Union not to take on new members
rashly and to strengthen the EU first through institutional reforms.

STRASBOURG - European Commission regular weekly meeting begins at 0730 GMT;
Commissioners Cresson and Fischler hold joint news conference on an action
plan on research in Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) at 1130

genetically-modified maize at 1400 GMT.
