[01] No fish satellite system accord
LUXEMBOURG - Fisheries ministers fail to strike a political agreement on a
satellite system for monitoring fishing vessels.
[02] Fish cut plans to be watered down
LUXEMBOURG - European Union fisheries ministers fought against plans to slash
fish catches by up to 40 percent over the next six years. - - - New fish
marketing rules accord LUXEMBOURG - Fisheries ministers reached political
agreement on a compromise text to revise fish marketing standards from January
2000, EU officials said.

LUXEMBOURG - European Union finance ministers applauded the Finnish markka's
smooth entry into the exchange rate mechanism, but trod cautiously around the
question of the Italian lira's future membership.
[04] Finland fulfils all EMU criteria
LUXEMBOURG - Finnish Finance Minister Sauli Niinisto said his country now
meets all the criteria for joining a single currency in 1999 after the weekend
move to link the markka to the exchange rate mechanism.
[05] Strict Maastricht treaty version
LUXEMBOURG - Germany wants a "clear, hard, strict and narrow" interpretation
of the Maastricht treaty when deciding which countries can join European
monetary union in 1999, finance ministry number two Juergen Stark said.
[06] EU-Nordics alcohol deal next week
LUXEMBOURG - The European Commission said there had been progress in sensitive
talks on phasing out rules that allow the three Nordic EU members to limit the
alcohol people may bring back home from elsewhere in the bloc.
[07] BSE cull decision under review/UK
LONDON - Britain will keep under review its decision not to proceed with a
selective cull of cattle vulnerable to "mad cow" disease in the light of new
scientific evidence, agriculture minister Douglas Hogg said.
[08] Intervention beef limit raised
LUXEMBOURG - The ceiling on beef intervention purchases on Monday was raised
by 60,000 tonnes to 460,000 tonnes in 1996 and young male cattle included in
the scheme, EU officials said.
[09] EU-Japan shipping consultations
BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Monday called for World Trade
Organisation consultations with Japan over maritime policy to make ports more
accessible to foreign shippers.
[10] EU-SADC co-operation meeting
DUBLIN - Talks between the European Union and the Southern African Development
Community this week will concentrate on regional conflicts and co-operation,
Irish Foreign Minister Dick Spring said.

PRAGUE - British Junior Foreign Office Minister David Davis advised the Czech
Republic to reject a key part of the Maastricht Treaty when it negotiates
membership of the European Union.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had been notified of the proposed
control of German insurance firm Vereinte Holding AG by Allianz AG, another
German company also active in insurance.
[13] EU to vet Gillette/Duracell deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had been notified of the proposed
takeover of U.S battery maker Duracell International Inc by The Gillette
Company, another U.S. company which makes shaving products.
[14] Dutch PTT/Australia's TNT review
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it was reviewing the proposed takeover
of Australian transport group TNT Ltd by Dutch PTT Post BV.

LUXEMBOURG - EU environment ministers' meeting begins at 0800 GMT; agenda
includes open debate on the auto-oil programme.
BRUSSELS - European Commission President Santer and Commissioners Marin and
Brittan meet Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at 1045 GMT.
BRUSSELS - Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas meets WEU Secretary
General Jose Cutileiro at 0635 GMT.
