NICOSIA - A representative of the Irish presidency of the European Union said
he was optimistic a solution could be found to end the division of Cyprus, a
candidate for EU membership

DUBLIN - The European Union said it was satisfied with the results of the
recent round of inter-Tajik talks held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to pave the way for European firms
to ignore a U.S. law penalising foreign firms for doing business with Cuba, EU
officials said.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had cleared a joint venture in the
natural gas field between Chevron, British Gas and Nova.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will tell Volkswagen AG in September that
alleged distribution restrictions in Italy violate European Union competition
rules.

TOKYO - Japan and the United States are likely to hold ministerial-level talks
on Japan's insurance market, but have no plans to extend a looming deadline
for settling the row, Japanese officials said.
