BRUSSELS - The European Union was gearing up for another trade battle with the
United States on Wednesday after Washington moved a step towards widening its
laws against foreign companies doing business with "enemy" nations.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had approved the
payment of five billion francs in state aid to Air France, the third and final
tranche of a 20-billion-franc rescue package.

BRUSSELS - EU Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock said on Wednesday he saw no
conflict in Britain and the European Commission both probing the competition
effects of the alliance between British Airways and American Airlines.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will assess after its August recess
progress made in opening the European air transport sector to competition and
the controversial issue of promoting lowering fares.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission adopted a packet of initiatives on
Wednesday aimed at smoothing the way for the information highway in Europe,
but stopped short of proposing new rules in sensitive areas such as
pornography.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Wednesday adopted a proposal for a
directive which would set up a mechanism for member states to notify the EU
authorities of planned new rules and regulations for information society
services.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it planned to spend $44
million in the next five years to promote combined transport -- moving goods
between two places on at least two different forms of transport without
unloading.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission proposed on Wednesday that the World Trade
Organisation take up the sensitive question of how to promote core labour
standards such as bans on child slavery and forced labour.
[11] TNT/PTT Post control of GDEW deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had cleared the plans
of PTT Post BV, a unit of Dutch post and telecoms group Dutch PTT and
Australian transport company TNT Limited to take joint control of GD Express
Worldwide NV.

BRUSSELS - The European Union, in a bid to ease world grain shortages, has put
more land under the plough but Third World buyers face another year of
unstable prices before the grain reaches their silos.

LONDON - Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg said on Wednesday he was issuing
for consultation a proposal for removing the heads of all sheep and goats from
the food chain.

ZAGREB - European Union officials said on Wednesday their mission to help
reunify the Bosnian city of Mostar was in doubt after negotiations failed to
resolve a political impasse.
