[01] Farm price marathon begins
BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers began marathon talks on Monday to
find ways of coping with the four-month-old crisis over mad cow disease and
its huge cost to the taxpayer.
[02] Sheep offal ban from food chain
BRUSSELS - The European Union's farm commissioner Franz Fischler said on
Monday he is proposing to ban nervous tissue and spleen from sheep and goats
from the food chain after scientists found sheep could be infected with mad
cow disease.
[03] Penalty set-aside scrapped
BRUSSELS - France told the farm Council on Monday it still wanted the EU to
suspend mandatory set-aside next year, but held out the prospect of some crop
idling if the EU also abolished extra penalty curbs, EU officials said.
[04] Maize, rye, barley,sorghum duties
BRUSSELS - The European Union will raise duties on imports of maize from
distant origins to 30.27 Ecus a tonne on Tuesday from 21.94 Ecus, the European
Commission said.

LONDON - Britain took a diplomatic initiative on Monday to protect its hard-
pressed fishing fleet from what it sees as unfair competition from other
European states.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is stepping up pressure on EU member states
to unblock the proposed European Company Statute and other measures that have
been stymied by disputes over worker participation provisions.

BRUSSELS - The Irish presidency, warning that the EU is not on course top meet
key waste management targets, has called for steps to make waste policies more
effective.

FRANKFURT - German rail operator Deutsche Bahn AG and Mannesmann AG said on
Monday they agreed the final details of a telecommunications joint venture in
a bid to challenge monopoly Deutsche Telekom AG.

LONDON - Britain unveiled on Monday its proposals for reform of the European
Court of Justice, saying the court had to be prevented from imposing excessive
costs on government and businesses, and from making new laws.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to approve on Wednesday five
billion francs in state aid to French state-owned carrier Air France, the
third and final tranche of a 20-billion-franc package, an EU source said on
Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had cleared a deal under
which Enderly Holdings Ltd will buy the Saia-Burges Electronics group of
companies which formerly constituted the electronics division of Williams
Holdings Plc.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had cleared a joint
venture between German chemical company Hoechst AG and U.S.-based company 3M.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had cleared the takeover
of the duty and tax free shopping business Allders International by Swissair.
[14] EU expresses concerns to Burma
JAKARTA - The European Union expressed its concerns to the Rangoon government
over the situation in Burma on Monday but agreed to further dialogue, Irish
Foreign Minister Dick Spring said.
