[01] Cuba sanctions law delay welcomed
BRUSSELS - The European Union welcomed on Wednesday the United States's
decision to delay part of its controversial Cuba sanctions law, but said it
would continue to fight the plan. In BONN, German Foreign Minister Klaus
Kinkel also welcomed the decision, saying it was a "step in the right
direction".

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, responding to the concerns of financial
institutions, has amended its proposed legal framework for a single currency
by clarifying more precisely the issue of contract continuity.

BRUSSELS - Initial discussions on plans to liberalise the European Union's
natural gas markets showed that member states want a directive and are ready
to start negotiations, an EU official said on Wednesday.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Union must urgently take wide-ranging
measures to avoid beef mountains piling up because of the mad cow crisis, Farm
Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Farm ministers will discuss on Monday, at France's request,
measures to strengthen the monitoring of mad cow disease and to ensure that no
suspect animal tissue enters human or animal food, EU officials said.

BRUSSELS - Discussion of fears that the effectiveness of new European Union
heat treatment rules to eradicate mad cow disease from gelatine and animal
feed have been postponed, a Commission spokesman said on Wednesday.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Commission cleared the merger of Swiss drugs
giants Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz on Wednesday after the two agreed to grant non-
exclusive licences for methoprene, an animal anti-parasite product.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had cleared a modified
version of Dutch television venture Holland Media Group involving RTL4 SA and
Veronica.

One international telecommunications ventures involving France Telecom,

STRASBOURG, France - The European Commission will investigate plans by
Belgian telephone company Belgacom to raise prices, EU Competition
Commissioner Karel Van Miert told a news conference on Wednesday.

Wednesday the Commission needed more information on a rescue plan for Belgian

BRUSSELS - The European Commission decided on Wednesday to investigate aid
granted by the northern German city state of Bremen to bankrupt shipbuilder

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cleared a restructuring plan for
France's Compagnie General Maritime which involves total subsidies of 3.3
