    BRUSSELS - The European Union's Italian Presidency put forward to EU farm ministers on Tuesday a compromise on the 1996/97 farm price package. In the two-page text obtained by Reuters, the 18 percent reference rate for cereals set-aside, monthly cereals storage and sugar refund proposals remained the same.

    LUXEMBOURG - The Italian Presidency resumed bilateral talks with member states on Tuesday evening after key producer countries rejected a "final" compromise on fruit and vegetable reform, EU officials said).

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union farm ministers agreed unanimously early on Wednesday the share-out of 850 million Ecus in special aid for beef producers to compensate for losses due to mad cow disease, EU officials said.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union and central and east European farm ministers held a second meeting on Tuesday to prepare for the EU's enlargement east, focusing on how to make farmers competitive and ways to develop rural areas.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union environment ministers said on Wednesday global efforts to curb greenhouse gases were too slow.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union environment ministers rejected late on Tuesday a proposal to authorise genetically-modified maize for widespread use, asking the European Commission to reconsider the file.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission gave its conditional blessing on Tuesday to a plan by German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom AG to grant price rebates to its business customers.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had approved a merger under which Swiss staff agency Adia will acquire control of French company Ecco.

    [09] Europe's digital pay TV sector

    BRUSSELS - Europe's digital television sector, on the verge of taking off across the continent, is still divided over the best way to give consumers easy access to a variety of pay programmes. The European Commission, alarmed by a battle between rival broadcasters in Germany, is putting pressure on the industry to agree a strategy to ensure that viewers do not have to invest in more than one digital decoder.

    TUNIS- A European Union - delegation held talks on Monday with Libyan officials on ties between the European countries and Tripoli and on regional and international issues, the Libyan state-run television said.

    BRUSSELS - The Telecommunications Council will try on Thursday to bridge the gap between EU states wanting to move quickly to liberalise postal services and those backing a more cautious approach.

    LUXEMBOURG - The European Union and some of the world's poorest countries will discuss on Thursday extending special links into the 21st century at a ministerial meeting on the Pacific island of Western Samoa.
