    BRUSSELS - Britain renewed efforts to defuse the "beef war" with its European Union partners on Wednesday, offering a new plan for the gradual ending of a worldwide ban on British beef. In LONDON, Britain's Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind said approval of a framework may be possible next week.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union's Standing Veterinary Committee demanded on Wednesday that Britain kill more cattle to eradicate mad cow disease, British officials said.

    LONDON - Britain said on Wednesday it will provide an extra four million pounds for research into mad cow disease which has infected its cattle and resulted in a worldwide ban of its beef by the European Union.
