    BRUSSELS - The European Union gave the green light on Tuesday to 330 million Ecus in aid to combat AIDS, assist Asian and Latin American refugees and protect the environment, EU officials said.

    [02] Britain blocks Mexico trade pact

    BRUSSELS - Britain stepped up its blocking of European Union affairs on Tuesday by stonewalling a trade pact with Mexico that it has championed for months. Britain also blocked four measures at the Internal Market Council and may block more in social affairs next week.

    [03] Front impact safety directive

    BRUSSELS - Tuesday's Internal Market Council agreed a common position on a proposed directive which would require car manufacturers to provide front impact protection.

    [04] No agreement on foodstuffs laws

    BRUSSELS - The Internal Market Council on Tuesday failed to reach agreement on a common position on a proposal on the harmonisation of national legislation on dietary foodstuffs, diplomats said.

    [05] Monetary Committee meeting

    BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee ended a routine meeting on Tuesday which focused on Germany's worsening public finances and progress towards economic and monetary union.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to back the creation of an independent veterinary inspection agency in Ireland on Wednesday after hearing that their own officials would not volunteer to work there.

    [07] Carter drums up support for peace

    BRUSSELS - Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter won unqualified support from the European Commission for his efforts to bring about peace in Africa's Great Lakes region, an EU spokesman said on Tuesday.

    [08] Commission water policy attacked

    BRUSSELS - Industry groups attacked the European Commission's water policy thinking on Tuesday, accusing the executive of spawning a welter of contradicting laws down the years which had hampered possible water quality gains.

    [09] Commission cuts BSE aid

    BRUSSELS - European Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler has cut back proposed special beef and suckler cow premium payment increases to producers to allow member states to target part of the money to those in most need, a Commission official said on Tuesday.

    BRUSSELS - Senegalese fishermen demonstrated outside the Council of Ministers on Tuesday for a fairer deal from European Union countries accused of over- fishing the rich waters off their coast.

    BRUSSELS - European Commission regular weekly meeting begins at 0730 GMT; Commissioner Fischler presents proposal for Council regulation establishing a European agency for veterinary inspection, proposal for common meat market, Commissioner Bonino communication on fisheries measures - followed by a news conference at 1015 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - Commissioner Bonino addresses the EP Fisheries Committee on "The fourth generation of the orientation programme" at 0700 GMT.

    BRUSSELS - EP Women's Rights Committee public hearing on "Independent spouses" begins at 1300 GMT.

    ROME - Commissioner Hans van den Broek and troika of senior EU officials from past, present and future presidenties (Spain, Italy and Ireland) on official visit.

    BRUSSELS - Economic and Social Committee (ECOSOC) plenary session begins at 1230 GMT (first of two days).
