  • [01] Commission to decide on beef ban

    OTRANTO, Italy - The European Commission is due to decide on Wednesday whether some beef products such as gelatine and tallow should be exempted from a worldwide ban on British beef exports, Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Monday.

    [02] EU vets not expected to ease ban

    BRUSSELS - European Union veterinarians will not decide this week whether to ease the ban on British beef imposed by the EU to combat mad cow disease, the European Commission said on Monday.

    BRUSSELS - Education ministers responded on Monday to the European Commission's white paper on education, giving a cool response to its ideas on language teaching and ideas on "second-chance" schools for those children dropping out.

    MADRID - New Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and his government stormed into office on Monday with a thinly veiled threat of retaliation if other European Union states fail to wait for Spain on the road to a single currency.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to adopt on Wednesday its green paper on commercial communications, aimed at ensuring a single market in the advertising and related sectors, Commission officials said on Monday.

    BEIRUT - The European Union does not expect to play a role in implementing the ceasefire accord that ended Israel's 17-day bombardment of Lebanon, Italian Foreign Minister Susanna Agnelli said on Monday.

    BRUSSELS - The Council of Ministers adopted on Monday a directive relating to the side-impact resistance of motor vehicles CO519, it said in a news statement.

    BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom - - Western European Union (WEU) Council meeting of foreign and defence ministers begins at 0730 GMT; associated members and Commissioner for Relations with east Europe and CIS Hans van den Broek also attend; discussions on integration of Russia and Ukraine into European security architecture and lessons arising from the experience of European forces in IFOR's deployment to the former Yugoslavia; news conference at 1530 GMT.
