    [01] U.K. will start cattle slaughter

    LONDON - Britain said it would start slaughtering thousands of cattle in the next few days in a bid to restore confidence in beef following the mad cow disease health scare.

    [02] British farmers attack government

    LONDON - Angry farmers on Thursday attacked government arrangements to cull thousands of cattle and restore faith in mad cow-tainted British beef as a farce and a shambles.

    [03] EU set to clear Krupp

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to approve the acquisition by Fried Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp of a majority stake in Italian steel company Acciai Speciali Terni SpA, a European Union source said on Thursday.

    [04] Transparency mechanism

    BRUSSELS - A European Commission proposal for a "transparency mechanism" which would oblige member states to notify all planned regulations which would hinder the free flow of services on the information highway is imminent.

    VISBY, Sweden - Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson hosts Baltic Sea States summit (Friday-Saturday). Commission President Jacques Santer attends.

    OTRANTO, Italy - EU farm ministers hold informal meeting (begins on Sunday); discussion will focus on the impact of regional trade agreements on the Common Agricultural Policy and the current situation in the beef market.

    CAIRO - Italian Foreign Minister and current EU Council President Susanna Agnelli meets Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and Arab League's Secretary General Esmat Abdel-Meguid (Sunday).
