  • [01] Qualified support for beef ban

    LUXEMBOURG - The European union signalled qualified support on Tuesday for a gradual relaxation of a worldwide ban on British beef exports but asked Britain to do more to control mad cow disease and set no time timetable, an EU official said.

    [02] British plans to cull cows

    LONDON - British plans to start culling cattle and rid the 11 million herd of mad cow disease ran into problems after it became clear that the abattoirs involved had yet to be formally approved. In LUXEMBOURG, the EU's veteri- nary committee said UK's plans to eradicate mad cow disease by slaughtering or quarantining 42,000 cattle were not good enough, an EU diplomat said.

    LUXEMBOURG - Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler sought on Tuesday to soothe concerns of French and other farm ministers over increased imports of chilled lamb from New Zealand.
