    BRUSSELS - The European Commission may start a full probe into the merger of Swiss pharmaceutical giants Sandoz AG and Ciba-Geigy AG, Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Friday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it was terminating an inquiry into alleged dumping in the European Union of South Korean and Singaporean video recorders.

    BRUSSELS - A single currency and closer political ties between EU governments will serve no purpose without a fall in the millions of people out of work, European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Sunday.

    LONDON - A controversial British scientist on Saturday warned of an epidemic of mad cow disease among humans and poured scorn on government proposals to eradicate the problem in cattle by a mass slaughter.

    LUXEMBOURG - EU farm ministers meet (and Tuesday); discussions will focus on the fruit and vegetable market, the price package and the current situation in the beef market - Italian Agriculture Minister Walter Lucchetti, Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler and British Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg meet during lunch to discuss BSE. - - - BRUSSELS - EU-Japan ministerial meeting; possible discussions on the world economic situation, EU-Japan trade and cooperation issues, WTO. GENEVA - Special meeting of EU trade ministers under the auspices of the General Affairs Council to discuss trade in telecommunications ahead of April 30 WTO deadline (and Tuesday).

    BRUSSELS - Round Table with Social Partners on the "European confidence pact on employment: global approach and general questions"; Commission President Jacques Santer gives closing address. Santer and Employment Commissioner Padraig Flynn then hold joint news conference on the outcome of the meeting.
