    [01] Gradual EU beef ban lifting

    LONDON - Britain said on Wednesday it foresaw that the European Union ban on its beef exports could be lifted gradually and that a total removal of restrictions could be some way off.

    [02] Major urged to send mad cow plan

    BRUSSELS - Commission President Jacques Santer has urged British Prime Minister John Major to present a detailed plan to eradicate mad cow disease as soon as possible, the Commission's chief spokesman said. In LONDON, John Major accused the EU of i llegally banning British beef, but ruled out retaliatory trade sanctions as a means of settling the mad cow crisis.

    [03] Lonrho/Gencor merger banned

    BRUSSELS - The Commission, fearful of handing the world's lucrative platinum market to just two producers, blocked SAfrica's Gencor and British-based Lonrho from merging their platinum businesses. In JOHANNESBURG, Gencor Ltd's Impala Platinum Holdi ngs said it would appeal against a Commission ruling which blocked its merger with the platinum interests of Lonrho.

    BRUSSELS - UEFA, European soccer's governing body, will meet the European Commission on Friday to discuss the aftermath of the controversial Bosman court ruling, Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Wednesday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is considering creating a high-level ad hoc group to discuss its paper on taxation in the European Union, Taxation Commissioner Mario Monti told MEPs on Wednesday.
