[01] Akinci: We are responsible for establishing conditions for peace and co-existence in Cyprus

"I would like you to spend the holidays with your family and your loved ones in health and peace," said Ak?nc?. "I addressed a speech to you again during the Ramadan festival which was just before the last Cyprus Conference in Crans Montana, in which I have emphasized that there will be a conference that either would come to a solution if determination for solution was to be shown or that would be a conference that will end in failure, if determination was not shown.

"I regret to say that we are very clear how right we are to be cautious at the Cyprus Conference in Crans Montana," said Ak?nc?, adding he predicted how the election atmosphere in the Republic of Cyprus would affect the negotiations.

"Despite all our well-intentioned efforts and the determination we have shown, we have not seen the same attitude by the Greek side. Instead of coming to the conference to agree on a reasonable framework, they came to find someone to blame. […[ It was unfortunate that a historic opportunity was plagued by this attitude", he stated.

He went on adding that the last Cyprus Conference in Crans Montana was a "decision conference beyond negotiation" for all parties and that it is not only their own but also the understanding of the United Nations. He claimed that the Turkish Cypriot side showed its determination for a solution, claiming that this could be not said for the Greek Cypriot side.

He also stated that with the same understanding and the same methods followed in the past a solution cannot be reached. "It is obvious that the open-ended negotiation procedure cannot continue anymore", he stated.

Akinci said that the Cyprus problem continue to be on the agenda in a way as long as all relevant parties have not reached a solution; however he said, the time that has pass did not contribute towards the realization of the federal solution spoken so far and reinforced the existence of two separate states. "You can say whatever you want; the existence of two separate states in Cyprus is a fact. Even if the TRNC is not recognized, it is a reality", he stated.

"The main reason for this is the Enosis struggle for many years by the Greek Cypriots. In 1963 the Turkish Cypriots, who were thrown out of the Partnership State, had to establish their own management mechanisms. The Turkish Cypriot Administration created in this framework was transformed into the Turkish Republic of Cyprus after 1974 and then to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. If the federal solution could be reached within the framework of the sharing of management, the TRNC would be equally transformed into one of the two constituent states. If this is not possible for reasons that are not related to us, the TRNC will not be removed", he stated.

"Whatever the outcome will be in the Cyprus problem, we do not have the right to neglect the responsibility of progressive ourselves even when we are struggling in that direction. Because life is not ending", he said.

[02] CTP called the so-called government to step back from its "decision" to prevent the conduction of the annual service at Ayios Mamas church in occupied Morfou village

Pointing out that it will be the first time after 2003, when the crossing points were opened, that the religious ritual will not take place at Agios Mamas church, CTP described the "excuse" given by the so-called foreign ministry as "unacceptable, invalid and meaningless". The "excuse" given by the "ministry" is that "it will not be possible to safeguard the security in the TRNC", since the religious ritual coincides with the celebration of the Kurban Bayram Feast (Feast of Sacrifice).

CTP underlined further in the statement that such "arbitrary practices" by the "foreign ministry" damage the feelings of trust between the two communities especially in this crucial period of the Cyprus problem. "It is very well known that these methods only serve the interests of racists circles", read the statement.

"In connection with this, we call the government to act with seriousness, correct its mistake and revoke its decision".

[03] Eroglu called for a new road map to be determined on the Cyprus problem

Accusing the Greek Cypriot side of not willing to share power sharing with the Turkish Cypriots in a "new partnership state" that will be based on the political equality of the two founding states, Eroglu called all parties in the occupied area of Cyprus, the "government" and the "assembly" to determine a new road map .

[04] "Police officers" in the occupied area of Cyprus to be "dismissed from their positions" for allegedly having links with FETO organization

According to the paper, the "attorney general" sent a letter to the "police chief" Suleyman Manavoglu, demanding the immediate "dismissal" of at least three "police senior officers". However, according to allegations, Manavoglu has not yet given this order.

As a result of the investigations, there are allegations that evidence was found that the "police officers" are users of ByLock, an encrypted messaging application used almost exclusively by Gulen supporters. Another "evidence" which was found, as the paper writes, is the fact the "police officers" were holding meetings with other members of FETO organization while visiting the occupation regime.

[05] Accusations that not granting visa to 20 Jamaicans who wanted to visit the occupied area of Cyprus was aimed at hurting the "TRNC tourism"

According to the paper, the authorities did not grant visas to the Jamaicans because they stated that they would continue their vacations in the occupied area of Cyprus.

[06] A new hotel was opened in occupied Trikomo

The hotel which has 55 rooms and bed capacity of 120, belongs to the Noyanlar Group and Halos Ltd partnership.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the hotel, the so-called minister of tourism Sunat Atun statedthat more investments are made every year in occupied Trikomo and added that while 7 years ago 400,000 tourists visited the breakaway regime, in 2016 this number rose to 1,2 million. He also said that their aim is 1.5 tourists to visit the breakaway regime in 2017. He added that they now have a bed capacity of 26,000 in the hotels operating in the breakaway regime and their aim is this number to reach 40,000.

[07] Turkey's MFA: "US indictment against Erdogan's security detail outside Turkish embassy 'purely political'"

In a statement the Ministry said that it protests the decision "in the strongest terms", and has conveyed its disapproval to the American Ambassador. It also pointed out that the indictment "included the names of people who have never even been to the United States".

Calling the decision "biased, unfounded and purely political", the Ministry claimed that the incident that took place outside the Turkish Embassy on May 16, 2017 in Washington was caused by the negligence of U.S. authorities.

A grand jury on Tuesday indicted 19 people, 15 of which were Turkish security officials, in connection with the incident in Washington between protesters and Erdogan's security personnel.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia said that charges had already been brought against 16 of the defendants, and three more were added to the list on Tuesday.

Two of the 19 defendants are currently in custody and are due to appear in court on September 7.

[08] Ankara court rejects merging of file on jailed HDP co-chair Demirtas

The file concerned a disagreement between the Ankara 2nd High Criminal Court and the Ankara 19th Criminal Court.

The Ankara 19th Criminal Court had requested to merge Demirtas's case file, in which he is accused of "establishing and leading a terrorist organization", "making terrorist propaganda", and "praising crime and criminals" with another case file at the 2nd court in which the killing of 15-year-old Yasin Boru and three others are under investigation.

The 19th court had demanded that Demirtas be made to account for the killing of Boru and three people in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r between Oct. 6 and 8, 2014 by merging the files. However, the 2nd court rejected the merger, which meant that the issue was taken to a higher court, the Ankara Regional Court of Justice.

The Ankara Regional Court of Justice is reported to have sent the 2nd court's application back, saying the application file contained signatures of the court members whereas it should only have included the signature of the chief judge.

Demirtas's lawyer Avukat Karaman has condemned the limbo regarding the case. "A trial date cannot even be given as there is no court to try my client," he said.

Karaman also said that because Demirtas's file cannot be processed, examination of the co-chair's continued pre-trial detention, which is required once every month, has not been carried out for two months.

"Demirtas has been in prison for more than two months without any court's arrest warrant," he added.

The HDP co-chair has been in jail in the northwestern province of Edirne since Nov. 4, 2016.

[09] Education Trade Union: 682 Turkish union member teachers reassigned against their wishes

One of the reasons cited for these compulsory reassignments is reported to be "participation in marches not in line with the Turkish Republic's fight against terrorism, in which slogans of 'murderer state' were shouted."

The Gaziantep and Diyarbak?r provincial directorates of the Education Ministry stated that the "compulsory reassignment" decision was undertaken for the 682 people as a result of investigations launched against them.

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has taken the issue to the parliament's agenda, submitting a parliamentary question to Prime Minister Binali Y?ld?r?m.

In a statement released on Aug. 28, Egitim-Sen vowed to "continue struggling". "For the end of every kind of oppression and compulsory assignment, and for the education right of our students, it should be known that we will continue our struggle," it stated.

Egitim-Sen Diyarbak?r branch head Abbas Sahin said in a press meeting on Aug. 29 that its members had been reassigned to various Central Anatolian provinces, and the union feared the teachers may face attacks in their reassigned areas. TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
