[01] Debates on the map submitted by Akinci during the Cyprus talks are continuing

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (24.01.17) reports that a debate on the percentage of 29+% included in the Turkish Cypriot proposal for being the territory of the Turkish Cypriot constituent state in a possible solution of the Cyprus problem was held yesterday at the "assembly" of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus.

Huseyin Angolemli, "deputy" with the Social Democracy Party (TDP), noted that a map providing for 29+% had been approved by the "assembly" in 1986, when he was also a "deputy", with the votes of all "deputies" including those of the National Unity Party (UBP).

Angolemli and Ferdi Sabit Soyer from the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), who are the oldest "deputies" in the "assembly", said that 29+% was registered as a decision of the "assembly" on 29 March 1986 upon a demand by the then UNSG Perez de Cuellar who had asked the Turkish Cypriot side to fall below 30% in the territory. Noting that Denktas was also at the "assembly" and everybody voted in favor of 29+%, Angolemli called upon the "deputies" to open the "minutes" of the "assembly".

"The rotating presidency was not in that document. It was an agreement providing for a president from the south and a vice president from us. And the territory was 29+%", he added.

Replying to Angolemli's criticism, Tahsin Ertugruloglu, "deputy" with the UBP and self-styled foreign minister of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of Cyprus, claimed that the allegation (by Angolemli and Soyer) that Denktas had accepted 29+% in the territory is "political forgery". He claimed that after a request by the then UNSG, Denktas passed from the "assembly" the percentage of 29+%. He alleged: "How had 29+% come onto the agenda? Perez de Cuellar requested from Mr Denktas. Go below the magical number of 30%. If they reject it, this percentage will cease to exist. And Mr Denktas has cleverly said 29+. […] 35 is also 29+. The president says that there is a map. There is the Denktas map. I have not seen such a map. Moreover, in 29+ neither the four freedoms were included like now nor Greek Cypriots would come among us. […]"

[02] British PM to visit Turkey on Cyprus talks and ISIL

According to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 24.01.17), British Prime Minister Theresa May will visit Turkey this week, with the agenda set to focus on ongoing settlement talks in Cyprus, international efforts to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and bilateral ties between Ankara and London as Britain prepares to start Brexit negotiations.

May is expected to visit Turkey on Jan. 26 or 28, diplomatic sources told the Hurriyet Daily News.

The trip comes amid the ongoing series of talks in Geneva for a settlement in Cyprus, with Ankara voicing disappointment on the recent stance of the U.K., which has been a guarantor country in the dispute for decades.
