[01] Reactions and decisions on the issue of the garbage heaps in occupied Lefkosia

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (02.11.12) reports that the self-styled council of ministers met extraordinarily yesterday and took some decisions on the issue of the strike which continues for one month in occupied Lefkosia "municipality". The "cabinet" gave time to the administration of the "municipality" to solve the problem as regards the garbage heaps until 5 November. It also decided to relieve of duty the "mayor", Cemal Bulutoglulari and the members of the "municipal council", if they do not meet and carry out their job. The "cabinet" decided also to launch an investigation for those who do not return to their work and not to pay the employees who participated in the strike during the last period and do not return to work on Monday, 5 November. The self-styled government authorized also the "district office" to collect all the garbage in occupied Lefkosia until Sunday.

The paper writes that the trade union of the municipal employees (BES) reacted strongly against the above-mentioned decisions and noted that only such decisions could be taken by "a short-sighted government". The union said that their strike will continue until the resignation of the "mayor" and the members of the "municipal council".

Meanwhile, under the title "There could be loses of lives", Turkish Cypriot daily Ortam newspaper (02.11.12) reports that the general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot doctors' union, Dr. Ozlem Gurku warned yesterday about the existence of threat for many diseases, such as diseases of the respiratory tract, poisoning and even AIDS. Dr Gurku expressed their worries as regards the danger of loses of lives and asked the solution of the problem the soonest.

The paper writes that the inhabitants of occupied Lefkosia rose up yesterday and held a protest in front of the self-styled prime minister's office.

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (02.11.12) reports that the protest was organized through the Facebook and that the participants in the activity asked for the resignation of Bulutoglulari and the "government". According to the paper, the protest was supported by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP).

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (02.11.12) reports that Mustafa Emiroglulari, self-styled MP with the Social Democracy Party (TDP), referred to the relations between Turkey and the breakaway regime and the problems in occupied Lefkosia "municipality" in his address yesterday at the "assembly". Emiroglulari said that these problems constitute a threat to the health of the people and called on everybody to go out in the streets and struggle. He criticized the fact that nothing is done in spite of the fact that the majority of the community considers "mayor" Bulutoglulari responsible of the situation in the "municipality" and argued that they came close to the appointment by the Turkish Prime Minister of a governor who decide who will be their "prime minister" and the "president" in the occupied area and who will collect the garbage.

Noting that they feel uncomfortable because of the relations "motherland-daughter land", which exist between Turkey and the breakaway regime, he said that they want relations "between states" with Turkey.

[02] Reactions to Erdogan's statement that "there is no country named Cyprus"

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (02.11.12) reports that Omer Kalyoncu, "MP" with the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), reacted yesterday to the statement made by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Germany that "there is no country named Cyprus in the world'. Addressing the "assembly", Kalyoncu said: "Actually, there is not respectable state named TRNC. Neither Turkey nor the National Unity Party behaves as if such a state exists. We live in a country where the president of the republic violates the constitution and the government does not comply with the laws. No one can argue the opposite."

Meanwhile, Yeni Duzen (02.11.12) reports also that Izzet izcan, general secretary of the United Cyprus Party (BKP) has said that there is an island named Cyprus and that the Republic of Cyprus is neither a Greek island nor an extension of Anatolia. In a written statement issued yesterday, Izcan noted that Erdogan's statement that "there is no country named Cyprus" showed once more the insincerity of the Turkish Prime Minister. Izcan pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus is a state in which the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots are politically equal. He said that the solution to be found to the Cyprus problem will be secured by turning the Republic of Cyprus into a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation.

[03] Eroglu meets Turkish and Greek Cypriot academicians

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (02.11.12) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu met yesterday with the Cyprus Academic Dialogue Platform, which is comprised of Turkish and Greek Cypriot academicians. During the meeting, Eroglu alleged that he attended the negotiations with the intention of reaching an agreement and he showed his determination with the proposals he submitted. He claimed that he exhibited this determination in the letter he had sent to the UN Secretary-General right after his "election".

Eroglu said that they have discussed all chapters except the guarantees and argued that the Turkish side had submitted to the UN Secretary-General the proposal of holding summits for the Cyprus problem in order to explain better its, so-called, will for reaching an agreement. He said that they had held five such summits.

[04] Cerkez meets with the Irish Ambassador

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (02.11.12) reports that Gunay Cerkez, chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KTTO) met yesterday with the Irish Ambassador to Lefkosia, Patrick Scullion and asked the support of Ireland for the Turkish Cypriots, as Ireland is the country that will overtake the European Union's term president in January 2013.

In a statement issued by KTTO, it is said that Cerkez told the Ambassador that the Turkish Cypriots, who cannot carry out direct trade and direct flights, are living in an open prison. He argued that the Green Line Regulation is implemented with limitations due to political reasons and that the Turkish Cypriots will be able to breath in a better way, if the Direct Trade Regulation is approved.

Cerkez described as using "double standards" the fact that the acquis communautaire is suspended in the occupied area of Cyprus, noting that this caused great decrease of the trust of the Turkish Cypriots in the EU.

[05] Denktas sees early "elections" in March

Under the title "Denktas: There are early elections in March", Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (02.11.12) reports that Serdar Denktas, chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) has argued that it was inevitable for "early elections" in the occupied area of Cyprus to come onto the agenda in March. In a statement issued yesterday by the DP, it is noted that Denktas said their target is to be the party that would establish the "government" after the "elections", because everybody is unhappy and thinks of migrating from the occupied area of Cyprus.

[06] The walls of occupied Famagusta are collapsing

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (02.11.12) reports that the historic walls of occupied Famagusta are collapsing. The paper notes that the walls had been constructed by the Louisianans (1192 and 1489 AC) and fortified by the Venetians in 1550. The stones of the walls have started to fall down and constitute a threat for people's life, writes the paper, which complains about the indifference of the "officials of the regime.

[07] "Turkey to request Patriot deployment from NATO"

Under the above title Turkish Hurriyet Daily News (02.11.12, online) reports the following:

"Turkey plans to officially request NATO deploy a Patriot missile defense system in its territories as a security precaution against a potential large-scale military offensive from Syria as Syrian shelling on the border raises tensions.

'We have been closely working with NATO on contingency plans regarding the developments in Syria and these plans also include the deployment of missile defense systems in Turkey,' a senior Turkish diplomatic source said Oct. 30. 'We are planning to make this request in the case of escalation of the scale of attacks against us.'

Turkey has invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty twice, which provides for consultations, after the downing of its jet and the killing of five Turkish citizens in a Syrian shelling, but took no action in pursuing Article 5, which considers an attack against one member an attack against all. 'We have received sufficient support from NATO so far. The last statement NATO issued after the Akcakale incident, was very powerful. We continue to be in close dialogue with the alliance,' the source said.

Turkey has requested the deployment of Patriot missile defense systems twice in the past, both in the context of the Iraqi war in the early 1990s and 2000s. In both cases they were deployed by the Netherlands, as only a few countries have such missile systems. 'I would not be surprised if Turkey would soon make such a request,' a diplomat from a NATO country said. 'The situation is getting worse in Syria, and it's the right of Turkey to take necessary security measures.'

The Turkish diplomatic source dismissed claims that Turkey would ask to use NATO's early warning radar system located in the Kurecik province of Malatya in Eastern Anatolia, because Turkey's national radar system was capable of tracing Syrian missiles.

Turkish diplomatic sources have also fiercely reacted against U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling's comments last week, that it is not clear who is shooting shells from Syria into Turkey. 'We are not sure if these shells are from the Syrian army, from rebels who want to get Turkey involved in the issue or from the outlawed PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party),' he said.

The source said, 'The bombs that landed in Turkey show they are Russian-made Douchka bombs. What he said is really ridiculous.'"

[08] Former President Ozal was reportedly poisoned

Turkish Hurriyet Daily News newspaper (02.10.12, online) reports the following on former president's Turgut Ozal's death:

"An autopsy report conducted on former president Turgut Ozal, claims a poisonous substance was found in samples taken from the body, leading to suspicions the leader may have been poisoned, daily Bugun reported.

The forensic medical department's report claims that strychnine keratin, a bitter and highly poisonous compound, was found in the samples.

As part of the Ankara Prosecution office's investigation, Ozal's body was exhumed from his grave earlier this year in order for samples to be collected for the investigation.

A press conference will be held by Chief of the Medical Forensic Institute Professor Haluk Ince at 10 a.m in Istanbul.

'The report is not finished yet. We are working on it,' Haberturk TV reported Ince said.

Further details can be found in the Hurriyet Daily News when the report is officially published.

Ozal, Turkey's 8th president, died on April 17, 1993". TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
