Gul's meeting with his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu, a statement by BDP MP Ertugrul Kurkcu describing Turkey as an occupying force in Cyprus, statements by the Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan noting that Turkey's growth rate surpassed the Chinese one and other internal issues are some of the main stories covered by today's Turkish dailies. Turkish dailies report also on yesterday's meeting between the two leaders in Cyprus within the framework of the Cyprus talks and on statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu after the meeting.

[01] Eroglu says that tension existed yesterday during his meeting with President Christofias

In statements after returning to his office, the Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu said that some tension existed during the meeting and accused the Greek Cypriot side of choosing only the points it likes from the old UN plans for Cyprus and of denying or rejecting the rest. "Debates like this continued today [yesterday] as well", he noted. Eroglu claimed that the Greek Cypriots do not accept the bi-zonality to be permanent. He went on and said: "They submit proposals in the direction of eliminating bi-zonality after a transitional period. Meanwhile, federation will be permanent... You know that bi-zonality is one of the main parameters of the UN and the insistence of the Turkish Cypriot people on this bi-zonality continues?"

Eroglu said that they exchanged views on the property issue yesterday and discussed the issue of the population census.

Eroglu reiterated the allegation that seven UN experts observed the census held in the occupied area of Cyprus, which was allegedly carried out according to the rules. "A population census was conducted. It came to light that the population is around 300 thousands. In any case, it is a reality that it could not be more than 300 thousands", he claimed.

Eroglu argued that this number came out after everybody living in the occupied area of Cyprus was counted. He added: "We said that from this point of view there is no need for them being oversensitive on this issue. If we had another intention, we could have shown a much higher population number, but both we and those who govern must know the real population. The population census was held with this mentality".

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen (13.12.11) covers the developments under the title "Deadlock".

Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes (13.12.11) refers to the same issue and argues that President Christofias is against bi-zonality.

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibrisli (13.12.11) argues that "This was about to happen", and refers to a "crisis at the meeting between Eroglu and Christofias".

[02] Soyer: When Eroglu and UBP asked money from Turkey they said the population is 700 thousands

Soyer referred also to the recent report of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus and described it as "very important". He said the report should be well examined, translated into Turkish and distributed to all sides concerned before the tripartite summit to be held in New York in January.

Addressing the same meeting of the "assembly", Ozkan Yorgancioglu, chairman of the CTP, said that the negotiations for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem continue for many years and the Turkish Cypriots are facing a problem with their identity because of the long lasting solution process. Yorgancioglu argued that the Turkish Cypriots need the solution for being unified with the world and sell their products. He said that the solution should be a "concept" which will first of all safeguard the interests of the Turkish Cypriots and take into consideration the interests of Turkey.

Yorgancioglu underlined that Dervis Eroglu is "not at a point of continuing the negotiations" from where former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat left them. He said that Eroglu carries out the negotiations according to his own understanding and is not in harmony with the people's expectation.

Referring to the preliminary results of the population census, Yorgancioglu said that they create the impression that the announcement of the number 294 thousands will cause problems.

Moreover, speaking at the same meeting, Mehmet Cakici, chairman of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), said that the Greek Cypriots will undertake the EU term presidency after six months and added that if a solution is reached the Turkish Cypriots will also overtake this presidency after 14 years.

[03] CHP MP alleges that there is not such a thing as Cyprus problem Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris (13.12.11) reports that Kamer Genc, MP with the Turkish Republican People's Party (CTP) has alleged that there is not such a thing as Cyprus problem.

He went on and added that for his party there is no Cyprus problem since there are two communities with different languages, different religions and different cultures on the island. He said that when Tayyip Erdogan and Abdullah Gul came to power they elected as "president" the pro-Greek Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat and wanted to eliminate the former Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas.

Genc criticized strongly the AKP government in Turkey and said that the AKP MPs follow blindly the orders of Erdogan.

[04] A BDP deputy said Turkey invaded in Cyprus in 1974

Replying to the above statements, Akif Hamzacebi, MP with the Republican People's Party (CHP), said: "It is not an invasion. The government of that period went there in order to protect the rights of the Turks who lived in the TRNC and with the aim to prevent the ongoing oppression, the injustices the deaths and the murders".

The paper writes that Hamzacebi's statements were applauded by AKP's MPs.

[05] Gul met the Romanian President in Ankara

Recalling that Turkey and Romania signed a strategic partnership document aiming at boosting bilateral relations, Basescu said the document also foresaw cooperation in foreign policy, security and combating terrorism. He pointed out that trade volume between the two countries reached 5 billion U.S. dollars in the first nine months of 2011 and stated that during his meeting with Gul, they discussed regional matters including developments in the Middle East. Moreover, he expressed Romania's full and resolute support to Turkey's EU membership.

Gul for his part expressed gratitude for Romania's support: "Basescu told me what they discussed in Brussels as he came from that city, we have learned about valuable views." He said that Turkey's debt burden was 40 percent, the Maastricht criteria were 60 percent, while Turkey's budget deficit was 2.5 percent, the Maastricht criteria were 3 percent. "When we take these figures into consideration, our economy is better today, and we hope EU's economy will be better from now on because we are so dependent on each other," Gul added.

I have concerns that this party -- which I supported with the belief that it is trying to be a clean and just party, as its name implies -- is increasingly becoming one of the ordinary parties of the corrupt Turkish political scene. Until this feeling of mine changes, i.e., until I am convinced by its performance that I was wrong, I will stop using the acronym "AK" (white/pure/clean) to refer to the said party. Congratulations to the AKP that Mr. Erdogan and his deputies collectively created!"

[08] Turkish Economy grows by 8.2%, current accounts deficit reaches $65 billion

The highest growth rate was in indirect financial brokerage services with 15.9 percent and the sector volume on fixed prices reached 3.9 billion TL. Construction sector grew by 10.6 percent, communications sector was up by 9.7 percent whereas wholesale and retail sector grew by 9.6 percent.

Additionally, according to the Turkish Central Bank, Turkey's current accounts deficit went up 31.5 billion USD (94%) between January and October when compared to the same term last year. In the first 10 months of 2010, Turkey's current accounts deficit was recorded as 33.5 billion USD.
