  • [A] TURKISH CYPRIOT / TURKISH PRESS

The contacts of a delegation from the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the occupied area of Cyprus, the developments regarding the earthquake in Turkey and messages of condolences from Turkish Cypriot politicians, reactions to the behavior of the "Grey Wolves" during the incidents last week between Turkish and Kurdish students at illegal YDU university, reference by the Chief of the General Staff to the explorations of the Republic of Cyprus for oil and natural gas in the Mediterranean Sea, more threats by Egemen Bagis against Cyprus in front of foreign reporters in Istanbul, and other internal matters are the main topics covered by the Turkish Cypriot press today. The papers also refer to information that the "population census" planned by the regime for 27 November will be postponed and new threats against Afrika newspaper by the person detained in prison for the attack against the paper few months ago.

Statements by the Turkish Chief of General Staff, General Necdet Ozel about Cyprus's drilling for oil in the Mediterranean, the operations against PKK and the relations with Syria and Israel, the postponement of the visit of French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe to Turkey, reports about the earthquake in the eastern province of Van, the increased number of victims from the natural disaster and the efforts exerted by the Turkish government to assist the victims and other internal issues are some of the main stories covered by today's Turkish dailies.

[01] Turkish Army Commander's statements on drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean

Turkish NTV news channel (24.10.11, online) reports on statements by Turkey's Chief of General Staff, General Necdet Ozel, who in a written response to questions by the NTV, commented on various issues such as the ongoing PKK operations, the co-operation with the USA, the relations with Syria and Israel, his views regarding the Sledgehammer trial, new proposals regarding professional soldiers and reducing the conscript duty.

Asked to comment on the "tension" in Eastern Mediterranean, Ozel said that the area is a very important route connecting the Atlantic with the Indian Ocean, which can also be described as an "energy waterway." He said that lately it has also been identified as an energy deposit, adding another reason to the 10-year-old problem of delineating the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ).

"Our country has a land surface of 780,000 km2 and there is an additional sea territory of 460,000 km2 called Blue Homeland. About one-third of our Blue Homeland is in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey is one of the countries with the biggest coastline in this sea, I believe that our EEZ should be proportional to the length of our coastline," Ozel argued.

He also claimed that the exploratory drilling conducted by the Republic of Cyprus constitutes a violation to the rights of Turkey and the "TRNC" [editor's note: as he described the breakaway regime]. He alleged that this is a unilateral effort to benefit from the natural wealth which belongs equally to Turkish Cypriots and to sabotage the ongoing negotiations.

[02] Bagis: "If the Greek Cypriot side makes a mistake, then their lives will become a nightmare"

Columnist Huseyin Macit Yusuf, writing in Turkish Cypriot daily Kibrisli (25.10.11), reported that Turkey's EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis, responding to questions by members of the foreign press in his office at the Istanbul-based Ministry for EU Affairs (22.10.11), gave a harsh reply to a question by Greek Cypriot daily Politis' correspondent, regarding Turkey's reaction in case Cyprus reunification talks fail and Cyprus further obstructs Turkey's EU accession bid or uses its veto. Replying to this question, Bagis said that such behaviour would be a mistake for "South Cyprus" (as Bagis refers to the Republic of Cyprus), adding that he does not recommend it and it would turn their lives (the Greek Cypriots) into a nightmare. Bagis also claimed that in case the Greek Cypriot side carries on with its allegedly intransigent stance and the UN Secretary?General declares that the problem cannot be solved, then some countries will opt to recognize "TRNC" [Translator's Note: breakaway regime in occupied Cyprus].

Yusuf, who also participated in the meeting, asked Bagis whether there is a "Plan B" including the "recognition of the TRNC" (breakaway regime in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus), in case negotiations end without a result.

Bagis stressed that Turkey has alternative plans on the Cyprus problem, as with other issues. He argued that Turkey's priority is to find a solution that will be for the benefit of both sides. He also said: "I always say this. If I were a Greek Cypriot, then I would work harder than Turkey's own EU Chief Negotiator so that Turkey joins the EU. The Greek Cypriot side creates problems for Turkey's accession into the EU, however, there are secret forces behind those problems."

Replying to a question referring to the Greek Cypriot side "sudden explorations" for an oil and natural gas in the Mediterranean, Bagis claimed that "this was a well-prepared game". However, he added, Turkey did not fall in the trap.

[03] TBMM delegation's contacts during its illegal visit in the occupied area of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot illegal Bayrak television (24.10.11, online) reports that a delegation from the Turkish Grand National Assembly Foreign Relations Committee is holding contacts in the "TRNC" [editor's note: the breakaway regime in the occupied area of Cyprus].

The Turkish parliamentary delegation paid a visit to the tomb of the late Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazil Kucuk, and then laid wreaths at the Ataturk Monument in occupied Lefkosia.

Later on, the delegation met with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu. During the meeting, Eroglu underlined the need for mutual willingness in order to resolve the Cyprus problem and repeated the position of the Turkish Cypriot side that "a solution must also be acceptable by motherland Turkey." The chairman of the Turkish Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee, AKP Deputy Volkan Bozkir for his part, said that all political parties represented at the Turkish Parliament fully supported Eroglu.

The delegation also met with Hasan Bozer, so-called speaker of the parliament, and Irsen Kucuk, self-styled prime minister. Speaking during the visit, Kucuk said that the visit of the delegation had given strength to the "Cyprus Turkish People" [editor's note: as he referred to the Turkish Cypriots], especially at a time when the Cyprus problem was going through a critical phase.

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi (25.10.11) reports that Bozkir during the meeting reiterated the support of all Turkish parties for the Turkish Cypriots' struggle. He also repeated the Turkish rhetoric that "everyone should know that the sun rises everyday in the island for two states, two presidents, two democracies, two prime ministers and two peoples."

The visiting delegation then came together with representatives from the respective committee of the breakaway regime's "assembly." The delegation also held meetings with the Turkish "Ambassador" to occupied Lefkosia Halil Ibrahim Akca, and so-called foreign minister Huseyin Ozgurgun in the afternoon.

[04] Rumour has it that the population census in the occupied areas will be postponed Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris (25.10.11) reports that Ozkan Yorgancioglu, the chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), stated yesterday that according to some rumours the population census which was planned to be conducted in the occupied areas of Cyprus on 27 November, will be postponed.

Yorgancioglu made these statements speaking at the self-styled assembly where he evaluated the "foreigners and immigration amendment draft law".

He stated that the new date of the census has not yet become definite and added that the "foreigners and immigration amendment draft law" should not pass until the conduction of the population census.

In addition, speaking during a television program, Yorgancioglu stated that when CTP was in "power", it exerted efforts to register the illegal workers and in the framework of these efforts 40 thousand persons had the opportunity to benefit from amnesty.

[05] Efforts by ORP and DGP to form a new party

Under the title "Towards a new formation", Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris (25.10.11) reports claims that the Freedom and Reform Party (ORP) and the Democracy and Trust Party (DGP) will be united into a new party, have been increased.

According to the paper, the leaders of the two parties made different statements regarding the progress of the effort towards the new formation. Turgay Avci, the chairman of ORP stated that the two parties have agreed upon principles. However, Tahsin Etrugruloglu, the chairman of DGP, said that the negotiation between the two parties still continues and nothing is definite yet.

[06] Dangerous instruments seized from "Grey Wolves'" cars by the so-called police

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika (25.10.11) reports that the so-called police, after a search it conducted in the cars which belonged to the nationalist group of the "Grey Wolves" who were to organize yesterday a protest at the illegal Near East University (YDU), seized various instruments such as swords, bats, axes, spear guns, satire and stones.

According to the paper, due to the security measures taken by the so-called police, the scheduled protest, which was to take place at the illegal YDU, has been postponed and thus the protesters marched to the "embassy" of Turkey in the occupied area of Cyprus, and gathered in front of the so-called assembly of the regime.

[07] KSP and Baraka Cultural Association condemned the deportation of Kurdish students

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika (25.10.11) reports that the Cyprus Socialist Party (KSP) in a written statement yesterday condemned the decision of the regime to deport the Kurdish students who clashed with a group of "Grey Wolves" during the incidents which took place at illegal Near East University recently.

In a written statement, KSP underlines that the deportation of the Kurdish students was illegal since the guilt of the people was not even proved and stressed that this showed once more that the people in the occupied part of Cyprus live in a militarist oppressive regime where the rule of law" does not exist.

The KSP asked also the immediate ending of the illegal deportations and the closure of the Hearts of the Ideal ("Grey Wolves").

Moreover, according to Afrika, the Baraka Cultural Association, in a written statement yesterday, condemned also the incidents which took place at the illegal YDU, supporting that the incidents, the arrest and the deportation of some students without taking into consideration their educational rights, revealed once more the lawlessness and the mentality of the police state in the "TRNC".

[08] Transfer of villages due to the construction of Alakopru dam

Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar (25.10.11) reports that according to a decision taken by Turkey's Council of Ministers, which was published in yesterday's official gazette, the inhabitants of the villages Akine, Ormancik, Sariagac and Caltibuku in Southern Turkey, should be transferred in a different place due to the building of the Alakopru dam, in Anamur town of Mersin, which will carry potable and irrigation water from Turkey to the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

[09] "Death toll in Turkish quake rises to 366"

Under the above title, Ankara Anatolia news agency (25.10.11) reports that according to a statement by the Disaster and Emergency Administration, the death toll in an earthquake which shook southeast Turkey on Sunday, has risen to 366, with 1,301 people injured. It also said 2,262 buildings collapsed in the quake, which struck Van province on Sunday afternoon with a magnitude of 7.2. (Richter scale)

    [10] Davutoglu's contacts

Ankara Anatolia news agency reports from Belgrade (25.10.11) that Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu upon completing his visit in Serbia, stated that the developing relations between Turkey and Serbia helped stability of Balkans. Davutoglu met with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic during his stay.

Noting that they discussed the disagreement between religious institutions in Senjak where Bosniacs were highly populated, Davutoglu said that solving this issue was important for both the peace of Muslims in Senjak and domestic peace of Serbia.

The Turkish Foreign Minister upon completing his visit in Serbia is bound to visit Qatar and Jordan.
