[01] Statements by Ozkan Murat on the issue of granting the citizenship of the breakaway regime

Mr Murat noted that while in 2003 about 6,000 persons had a work permit, this number increased to 10,000 in 2004, 30,000 in 2005, 50,000 in 2006 and exceeded 70,000 in 2007. This has nothing to do with the citizenship, he said.

The paper points out that the citizenship will not be granted automatically with the new law, that only after the completion of 10 years of work in the occupied areas a person can apply for the citizenship and that the right for granting the citizenship will be taken away from the ministry of internal affairs and be transferred to the council of ministers. The paper concludes as following: The citizenship which has been used as a material during the past years, especially in the elections, had been even given to persons who were not closely related to the country. Especially among those, the residence of whom was determined with false declarations and gained the citizenship, were the president of Ankaras Chamber of Commerce, Sinan Aygun and the Show TVs news speaker, Defne Samyeli.

[02] Avci alleges that the Greek Cypriots will suffer new defeats

Responding to the statements of the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Erato Kozakou Markoulli on the illegal visit of the President of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Saleh Bin Abdullah Kamel to the occupied areas of Cyprus, Mr Avci argued: The world is bored now by the temperament of the Greek Cypriots. It is inevitable for the Greek Cypriot administration which Markoulli represents to suffer new defeats every day. Mr Avci alleged that all the candidates in the forthcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus agree with Mrs Markoulli.

[03] The self-styled minister of economy and tourism Erdogan Sanlidag held contacts in Germany and the UK

The Minister of Economy and Tourism Erdogan Sanlidag is continuing his contacts in the German city of Frankfurt. Mr Sanlidags visit to Frankfurt is aimed at raising the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus voice about works being carried out in the tourism sector as Germany is one of the prior tourism markets for the TRNC.

As part of todays programme, the Minister of Economy and Tourism Erdogan Sanlidag had a gathering with a group of tour operators. Yesterday, the Minister visited the German office of tourism in Frankfurt. He later paid a visit to the Turkish Airlines Office where he had a meeting with the Head of the office Bayram Ozcelik.

During the meeting, projects of encouragement towards promoting flights to the TRNC and the opportunities given to tourism agencies were on top of the agenda. The Minister then met with the Turkish attaché of Culture and Tourism in Frankfurt Tahsin Yilmaz. Mr Sanlidag also had dinner with a former minister within the Hessen State Herr Lothar Klem. Erdogan Sanlidag will move on to London tomorrow to attend the World Tourism Fair which will take place between the 12th and 15th November.

The Minister of Economy and Tourism Erdogan Sanlidag who was in the German city of Frankfurt for a series of contacts is moving on to London today to attend the World Tourism Fair which will take place between the 12th and 15th November. Mr Sanlidags visit to Frankfurt was aimed at promoting new initiatives launched by the Tourism Ministry to Germany, one of the TRNCs prioritized tourism markets. As part of his contacts in Germany, Minister Sanlidag also came together with German tour operators.

[04] The number of the students in the six illegal universities in the occupied areas has reached 43,000

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (12.11.07) refers to the same issue under the banner front-page title The university contingents remained empty! The paper reports that in spite of the increase, only the half of the 12,000-student contingent was filled. Mr Celik said that the reason for this is the cost of living in the occupied areas, the existing image problem and the strategic mistakes committed regarding the departments where places are given.

[05] Sixty Greek Cypriots have been prevented from entering into the occupied areas of Cyprus

The paper reports that the Greek Cypriots were surprised when they faced the implementation of a new practice by the Turkish authorities at Zodeia gate. They were asked to find a Turkish guide and when they were not able to find one within a reasonable period of time, they were not allowed to enter the occupied areas, reports the paper. The 60 Greek Cypriots had made a reservation in Lara Restaurant for launch.

Cemal Kas, the owner of the restaurant said: These people have been coming for 1,5 years. They were not asked for a guide until today. They had made a reservation for 60 persons in my restaurant. Therefore, all the preparations I made were in my loss. On the one hand we complain that they do not come to leave money and on the other we send back those who come.

[06] The foundation of Cem House and Cultural Complex was laid yesterday

Addressing the ceremony, the president of the TRNC Research and Promotion Society of Haci Bektas-i Veli Culture, Ozdemir Gul said that the Alaouites all over the world have welcomed the fact that such a centre will be built in the occupied areas of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, the self-styled Prime Minister, Ferdi Sabit Soyer, the former Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas, the self-styled minister of foreign affairs, Turgay Avci and representatives of Alaouites from Europe attended the ceremony.

[09] The activities for the UDI are beginning

The International Discipline of Art Work will take place today in the occupied part of Nicosia. Artists from the USA, FYROM, Spain, Turkey, Holland, Lithuania and Germany will participate in this activity. Furthermore, within the framework of the celebrations, war vessels of the Turkish naval forces will anchor in the occupied ports of Keryneia and Famagusta on 14 and 15 November. The vessels will be open for the people to visit them.

Mr Uzun noted that they will struggle financially and not in a detective manner on the issue of the shopping of the Turkish Cypriots from the free areas of the island. He alleged that the sum of 135 euros provided for in the Green Line Regulation include the purchases for tourist purposes and not shopping goods from the supermarkets enough to fill many bags.

Mr Uzun argued that the government of the Republic of Cyprus imposes detective measures against the shopping from the occupied areas and alleged: Remember the control they exert even on a package of cigarettes. We are not considering of implementing such a practice. However, we need to direct our shopping by making a good research about prices. Furthermore, I want to note the following: The crossing to the South or the right of 135-euro shopping does not include every issue. That is, there is no rule which says that I will cross over five times daily and in all five of them I will make a shopping of 135 euros. It also does not include those who say I will go with my wife and children and each of us will make 135-euro shopping, purchase commercial goods, fill up the bags from the supermarkets and return. We respect the laws and the Green Line Regulation, but this is not the regulation. .

[13] The United Cyprus Party calls on the two sides in Cyprus to open the Ledra Street crossing point

He underlined the need for both sides to focus on reaching a common point on the opening of the Lokmaci barricade for crossings and said it would not be right to open the barricade for public crossings while troops were still there.

[14] Israeli President Shimon Peres is paying an official visit to Turkey

Israeli President Shimon Peres arrived in Turkey on Sunday.

Peres will visit Ataturk's Mausoleum (Anitkabir) today, and then give a conference at Bilkent University which will decorate him with honorary doctorate.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul will welcome Peres with a formal ceremony at Cankaya Presidential Palace on Monday. Guest President will hold meetings with Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, and also attend a dinner which will be hosted by President Gul in his honor on Monday.

Peres will address Turkish Parliament on Tuesday. He will proceed to Istanbul the same day, and meet with the Jewish community there, and then depart from Turkey.

Peres, together with Turkish President Gul and the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, will attend Ankara Forum. The 7th Ankara Forum --which was initiated by Turkey in April 2005-- will be held at Cankaya Presidential Palace on Tuesday. Framework agreement --which will start organized industrial projects at West Bank-- will be signed within the scope of Ankara Forum.

[15] A declaration of co-operation was signed between Turkey and Saudi Arabia

Turkey and Saudi Arabia signed on Saturday a declaration on cooperation between the two countries.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and his Saudi counterpart Saud al Faysal signed the declaration which came a day after Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Saudi King Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud met in Ankara.

The declaration said the two countries aimed at further developing relations in every field and cited an accord for more consultations on regional issues, and an intensified cooperation in the fight against terrorism and other crimes.

The declaration also urged for easier visa procedures for Turkish and Saudi Arabian businessmen. King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia departed from Ankara on Saturday.

Early in the day, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, King Abdallah and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a tripartite meeting. Also, Turkey and Saudi Arabia signed a declaration on cooperation between the two countries.

[16] Senior diplomat Jeffrey expected to be next US ambassador to Turkey

U.S. President George W. Bush has decided to nominate senior diplomat James Jeffrey as ambassador to Ankara to replace outgoing Ross Wilson next summer, sources said Thursday. A former army officer and a diplomat with a nearly 30-year career, Jeffrey is presently the president's deputy national security advisor. He has already served three times in Turkey and speaks Turkish. Jeffrey has been selected for the Ankara post due to his vast knowledge of Turkey and experience in Middle Eastern affairs, one source said. The White House is expected to release a statement on his nomination in the next few months, the source said. Most Washington insiders view Jeffrey as a "candid, good, smart and active" diplomat. To take office, a new ambassador must receive the host country's agreement and win the U.S. Senate's approval. Jeffrey served as deputy chief of mission in Ankara between 1999 and 2002 under ambassadors Mark Parris and Robert Pearson.

On Aug. 1, Bush named Jeffrey as assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor. Before his current job, Jeffrey was principal deputy assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs. He served as senior advisor on Iraq to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from August 2005 to August 2006. Ambassador Jeffrey was deputy chief of mission in Baghdad from June 2004 to March 2005.

From March to June 2005 Jeffrey served as U.S. charge d'affairs in Iraq. According to his biography at the State Department, he served as ambassador to Albania from 2002 to 2004. Other assignments have included deputy chief of mission in Kuwait, deputy special representative for Bosnian Implementation, postings in the State Department's European and Near Eastern Bureaus, and overseas service in Bulgaria, Germany and Tunisia. Jeffrey's first assignment was to Ankara between 1985 and 1987. He also served in Adana. Jeffrey received a BA degree in history from North-eastern University in 1969, and an MS in business administration from Boston University Graduate School of Management in 1977. From 1969 to 1976 he served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army with assignments in Germany and Vietnam. In addition to Turkish, he speaks French and German.

[17] Turkish Parliament passes nuclear bill after lengthy debate

Parliament passed a bill early Friday allowing the construction of nuclear power plants amid severe objections from environmentalists and opposition parties.

The tense session in the General Assembly began discussing the controversial bill Thursday and continued overnight. Former President Ahmet Necdet Sezer had previously vetoed the bill in May.

This is a historic moment. Our country will have long awaited nuclear power plants and technology with this bill, said Energy Minister Hilmi Güler.

The bill authorizes the Energy Ministry to finalize and issue tenders for the construction of nuclear power plants and decide on their capacity and location. It provides for public institutions to build the plants if there is no interest from the private sector. The parliamentary session witnessed heated debates during a 10-hour marathon session, where many of the amendments proposed by opposition lawmakers were turned down. Mehmet Ali Susam, 0zmir deputy of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), said Turkey's energy resources should be diversified and well exploited. Susam said the CHP was in favour of a nuclear law in accord with contemporary norms. He said that a law on nuclear energy law must be put in front of Parliament, before the tender law. The Adana deputy of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Y1lmaz Tankut, questioned whether the relevant authorities will look at relations between Turkey and the home country of any company that wants to build a nuclear power plant in Turkey.

Guler defended the bill and said: We are not building a pasta plant. Inspections and examinations are being conducted in line with the seriousness of nuclear energy. Environmentalists are strongly opposed to the nuclear bill. Hilal At1c1, representative of Greenpeace, told private NTV television on Friday that Turkey should think about renewable energy, not nuclear energy. To take effect, the bill now needs the approval of President Abdullah Gul, who took office in August.
