[01] Cyprus among the three most important items on the agenda of the meeting between Erdogan and Bush

Under the title The last round for the operation, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika (05.11.07) reports in its first page that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is visiting Washington and will meet this evening with the U.S President George Bush, will put on the table PKK, Cyprus and the 1915 (Armenian Genocide) events. Afrika, which notes that all the eyes are turned to the summit between the two leaders, notes that the decision regarding Turkeys cross border operation, will be taken after the meeting. Erdogan is hoping to sign with the USA a strategic partnership similar to the one he signed with Britain, according to Afrika.

The paper notes that Erdogan is accompanied by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Ali Babacan, the Turkish Minister of Defence, Vecdi Gonul, and high ranking military and government officials.

[02] The Turkish Cypriot press on the death of the Greek Cypriot Stephanos Stephanou

On the same issue, Illegal Bayrak television (02.11.07) broadcast the following:

Greek Cypriot inmate, who was detained on charges of smuggling historical artifacts has died at the Dr Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital while receiving treatment.

The 64-year old Stephanos Stephanou was taken to hospital last Wednesday with fever. Stephanou who had cancer - had rejected to receive treatment against the disease in the TRNC. The major cause of his death will be detected after an autopsy.

Stephanos Stephanou was arrested by police on the 18th of October on charges of smuggling historical artifacts and sent to the Lefkosia Central Prison on the 23rd of October.

The Director of the Central Prison Huseyin Kasapoglu told the BRT newsroom that the Greek Cypriot detainee had had a check-up before being sent to prison.

Mr Kasapoglu said that the doctors at the hospital had confirmed that he had had an operation but stated that there was no problem. Since then, he was taken to hospital a few times and told that he had to receive radiotherapy, but he had insistently rejected to receive treatment in the TRNC.

Under the title Beating claims on the death of the Greek Cypriot Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (05.11.07) reports that beating claims were involved on the issue of the death of the 65-year-old Greek Cypriot Stephanos Stephanou, who had cancer and was kept without being brought to trial at the central prison in occupied Cyprus,.

The family of Stephanos Stephanou will bring the case in front of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), writes the paper.

The Permanent Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Ali Alnar, denied the claims of beating, writes the paper and stated: That Greek Cypriots would have made up untrue and intentional news, it was assumed by us.

The noise of the Greek Cypriots is not a surprise. Neither a Turk nor a Greek Cypriot is beaten for any reason. There are no beating events in the jail. It is an obligation to deny these claims. We will wait for the results of the autopsy, he added.

[03] A delegation of the Turkish Grand National Assemblys Foreign Relations Committee went to occupied Cyprus for contacts and declared that it supports two-states solution

This is the first visit of the delegation, which is headed by the Justice and Development Partys Eskisehir MP Murat Mercan. The delegation laid a wreath at the tomb of Dr Fazil Kucuk. The Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosia, Turkekul Kurttekin participated also in the delegations visits. The delegation will leave occupied Cyprus on the 7th of November.

The TGNA delegation visited yesterday the self-styled speaker of the TRNC assembly Fatma Ekenoglu. Speaking during the visit Murat Mercan, who is the chairman of the TGNAs Foreign Relations Committee, stated that Turkey supports a solution in Cyprus, however, this must be a solution that will protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.

He also said that the efforts carried out to safeguard the representation of the Turkish Cypriot parliamentarians in European Organs started to give results and added that surprises must be expected in the coming days. He added that these surprises will be discussed later, after the journalists leave the room. Murat Mercan also said that he wants the contacts between the TGNA and the self-styled assembly to become frequent and that he will be happy to host a delegation of the TRNC assembly in Ankara.

Mr Mercan went on and expressed Turkeys support towards occupied Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriots.

On her part Fatma Ekenoglu stated that they feel happy and honoured because the TGNA Foreign Relations Committee paid its first visit abroad to occupied Cyprus. This shows Turkeys support towards the TRNC, she stated.

The paper goes on and writes the following: Ekenoglu stated that with initiatives undertaken within the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (IKO), the ferry services between occupied Famagusta port and Syrias Latakia port have started and despite the objections and the obstacles of the Greek Cypriot Administration, the ferry services continue.

Referring to the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi (05.11.07) reports that Murat Mercan stated that the solution that will be found in Cyprus must be a two regions, two communities and two states solution.

[04] Opening ceremony of the new hospital in occupied Famagusta

The hospital, which covers an area of 18,500 square metres, has a capacity of 120 beds and it is equipped with the latest technology building systems, will help to face the needs of occupied Famagusta and the area around the town.

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (05.11.07) reports about the opening ceremony of the new hospital under the title A dream came true.

Turkish Cypriot daily Vatan newspaper (05.11.07) reports also on the issue and writes that the self-styled prime minister Ferdi Soyer, who also attended the opening ceremony, stated the following: Every nail, which is pinned into a place, is a new foundation for the Turkish Cypriot people in this soil. On his part the Turkish Minister of Health Recep Akdag, stated the following: The time for lifting the isolation came a long time ago. The promises given to the Turkish Cypriot people must be kept.

He also stated that the new hospital has the meaning of the struggle for freedom and equality of the Turkish Cypriots. He went on and stated that in the point reached, keeping in mind that there are two people, two democracies and two states in Cyprus, will be undoubtedly useful to continue our efforts for the production of a comprehensive solution based on the UN ground for a new partnership foundation which will be based on political equality, equal status and the guarantor ship of Turkey.

[08] Soyer said measures will be taken regarding the Turkish Cypriots shopping in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has pointed to the increase in consumers tendency towards shopping in the South and said that the necessary measures would soon be taken on the issue after consultations with business circles.

The Premier said that the measures will be taken in the light of data to be obtained in surveys to be carried out at check points in the coming days.

Calling on the people to give the necessary backing to the surveys, Mr. Soyer said price analysis, price controls and calculations of costs will be made in the light of the data to be obtained from these surveys.

Stressing that the necessary measures will be taken to create the necessary conditions for fair competition, the Prime Minister said he trusts the peoples common sense.

On trade being realised within the framework of the Green Line Regulation, Mr. Soyer pointed out that a 43% rise has been recorded in the amount of goods and products being sold to the South compared to the same period last year.

[09] The so-called prime minister Soyer briefed a group of German journalists

Prime Minister, Ferdi Sabit Soyer, has emphasized that the time has come to say stop to the Greek Cypriot Administration, which continues isolating the Turkish Cypriot People by using the European Union as a tool.

The Premiers words came during a briefing he gave to a group of German journalists on the Cyprus issue yesterday.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot people is still suffering from the international isolation despite of its approval of the Annan Plan in the 2004 referenda; Mr. Soyer underlined the need for the Turkish Cypriot people to own a position within the EU as an equal community.

Prime Minister Soyer stated that difficulties are being faced by the Turkish Cypriot people in the fields of economy and tourism as a result of obstacles put forward by the Greek Cypriot side.

Answering the questions of German journalists, Mr. Soyer said the TRNC has direct flights to Turkey only, adding that this affects the TRNC tourism negatively.

Touching upon the EU Direct Trade Regulation for North Cyprus, the Premier reminded that the Turkish Cypriot people became a member of the European Economic Community in line with international agreements and said Turkey is the only country that the TRNC can export.

We are having difficulties in direct trade and direct flights because of the Greek Cypriot sides pressure the Prime Minister said.

As for the Gazimagusa - Latakia ferry services, Mr. Soyer said the Greek Cypriot side is trying to stop the services by pressurizing Syria.

The Premier said: The Turkish Cypriot people waged a big struggle for a united Cyprus and the solution of the Cyprus problem under the UN parameters. The only reason for the non-solution is the Greek Cypriot sides intransigent attitude and this has been proven by all actions taken by them.

[10] Cyprus Turkish Airlines to continue its efforts for direct flights

The British High Court has accepted the Cyprus Turkish Airlines (CTA) and tour operator CTA Holidays Limited application to object the British Governments decision rejecting to issue a license to operate direct non-stop flights between Britain and North Cyprus.

According to the Cyprus Turkish Airlines written statement the British High Court on Thursday permitted the CTA and CTA Holidays Ltd. to object the British Governments decision rejecting the direct flights between the UK and the TRNC.

Commenting on the issue, the General Coordinator of the CTA, Sumer Garip, welcomed the decision of the court and added that the CTA and CTA Holidays Ltd. in a short period of time will file a law suit to the British High Court against the British Civil Aviation Authority.

The British Civil Aviation Authority had rejected the Cyprus Turkish Airlines application for direct flights on the grounds that such a move would be in violation of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as Chicago Convention.

The Cyprus Turkish Airlines expressed the view that the British government had misinterpreted the Convention, which it said, allows non-stop direct flights.

[11] Australian citizens living in occupied Cyprus to vote in the forthcoming federal elections

Australian citizens living in Cyprus will be able to vote in the federal election that will be held in Australia on Saturday, the 24th of November right here from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

All they have to do to be eligible to vote is to apply for a postal vote by downloading and completing an application form on the Australian Electoral Commission website at www.aec.gov.au or by writing to Australia Place, 20 Guner Turkmen Street, Lefkosia.

They also have the option of lodging a pre-poll vote in person at the Australia Place, which will be open for pre-poll voting on Tuesday the 13th of November, Tuesday the 20th of November and Thursday the 22nd of November between the hours of 08:30am and 12:00 noon.
