[01] Statements by Rasit Pertev on the meeting between Mehmet Ali Talat and President Papadopoulos

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (24.08.07), under the banner front-page title Pertev: The time of the meeting is wrong, reports that Mr Rasit Pertev, advisor of the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, has said that the meeting between Mr Talat and President Papadopoulos is a step which has been delayed, its timing is not ideal, but it is a positive step.

In statements during a visit to illegal Bayrak television, Mr Pertev said that this will be the third meeting between the two leaders for three and a half years and noted that even leaders who live in two different parts of the world meet more often. He noted that at the 5 September meeting all issues regarding the Cyprus problem will be on the table.

Mr Pertev claimed that President Papadopoulos letter to Mr Michael Moller, UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus, coincided with the announcement of the candidacy of Mr Dimitris Christofias, AKELs general secretary, for the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus. He alleged that carrying out negotiations during the period before the elections in the free areas of the island could not be the most healthy and ideal climate for negotiations.

[02] Serdar Denktas argues that nothing will come out of the meeting between President Papadopoulos and Talat

Illegal Bayrak television (23.08.07) broadcast the following:

Another comment on the meeting to take place between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Tassos Papadopoulos came from the Leader of the Democrat Party (DP) Serdar Denktas.

Mr Denktas claimed that nothing will come out of the meeting between the two leaders.

The DP Leader criticized President Talat for signing the 8 July Agreement with Mr Papadopoulos which he claimed buried the Annan Plan.

DP Leader Serdar Denktas was speaking on a programme on BRTs First Channel yesterday during which he evaluated the meeting which will be held between the two leaders of the island on the 5th next month.

Pointing out that Tassos Papadopoulos had earlier rejected the calls of the Turkish Cypriot Side for holding a meeting and suddenly gave a positive response as soon as he officially became a candidate for the coming elections in the South, Mr Denktas said the issue is being used as a tool in the Greek Cypriot domestic policy.

President Mehmet Ali Talat should have agreed meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader after the elections he said.

[03] AFRIKA: Karpass will be the area for the new swindle by the moneybags; KTOS describes Soyer as the prime minister of a puppet government of a separatist regime

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (24.08.07) reports that the constructions in the area of occupied Rizokarpasso village continue rapidly. In its Letter from AFRIKA column, the paper notes, inter alia, the following:

After a new line (for conveying electricity) is drawn from Rizokarpasso to the Cape of Apostolos Andreas, the rest of the virgin land will be destroyed. Karpass will be the area for the new swindle by the moneybags.

The paper reports also that the Turkish Cypriot Primary School Teachers Trade Union (KTOS) demanded from the government to state why electricity will be conveyed to Karpass and who will be served by the conveying of electricity to the area.

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (24.08.07) refers on its front page to the statement issued by KTOS and notes that Sener Elcil, general secretary of the trade union, said that the self-styled prime minister Ferdi Sabit Sabit Soyer refrains from giving answers to the question of why electricity will be conveyed to Karpass. He accused Mr Soyer of trying to deceive the people.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Volkan newspaper (24.08.07) publishes Mr Elcils statement accusing him of being rude, because he referred to Mr Soyer as the prime minister of a puppet government of a separatist regime established by others in the north part of the island. Mr Elcil said that Mr Soyer and his government are employees of Ankara, that they are trying to turn the country into a colony, that their aim is to colonize Karpass and that they are applying the orders they receive from Ankara.
