[01] More on the missing Christakis Georgious case

Turkish daily SABAH newspaper (06.03.07) reports that the story of the missing Christakis Georgious case took an interesting dimension when Mehmet Mercan who was a soldier in the area during 1974 remembered Christakis and said: I talked to his mother I carried away the child to the hospital. The child then was transferred to Adana.

Mercan went on and said: I vividly remember the child. He had come with his mother to our hospital in Dikomo. When I saw the mother I could not stand. I took the child in my arms and took him inside. The military doctors serving there showed great interest. After that with broken English I talked to his mother. I had asked how the child was wounded. She said something like stray bullet (Kaza kursunu-Accidental bullet). I do remember that the child was transferred to Adana.

The Turkish Doctors very well treated the child and the mother. In fact the commander of the regiment Colonel Nezih Siral had ordered the doctors to look after the child very well. The mother was made to wait outside after submitted Christakis in. The child was conscious when he was brought to the hospital. He was crying and talking. Then he was sent to Adana after that I cannot know what had happened Mercan stressed.

SABAH then publishes a statement by Christakiss mother Mirofora that she had taken her wounded son to the hospital where a Turkish soldier helped her and in fact cried with her.

The mother says that she is thankful to the Turkish family in Adana who brought up her son and what she wants is just to say him that she is his mother.

[02] Rauf Denktas on the case of the five-year old Christakis Georgiou who is missing since 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily GUNES newspaper (06.03.07) reports that the former Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas has departed for Switzerland in order to express his support to the chairman of the Labour Party (IP), Dogu Perincek against whom charges had been filed for rejecting the genocide against the Armenians.

In statements yesterday at the Ataturk Airport, Mr Denktas referred to the information published in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish press regarding the case of the five-year old Greek Cypriot Christakis Georgiou from occupied Palaikythro village who is missing since 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Responding to a question he said:

After the 1974 Peaceful Operation (Tr. Note: He is referring to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus) both sides were giving emphasis to the issue of the missing persons. We were searching for our missing persons and the Greek Cypriots for their own. Clerides explained to me the situation of a child and said that the child had been taken to a military hospital and that they do not know what had happened afterwards. During the investigation which I have conducted, a low ranking military official confirmed to me that such a child came. With joy I went to Clerides and said: I have good news. They say that the child is in the hospital. When we conducted an official investigation they said that the child died and that his mother was informed about it. Every mother lives in hope before seeing the body of her child. This woman contacted me afterwards. I understand the pain of this woman and her hopeless expectation. But I think that the things they are saying such as that the child has been sent to Ankara, he was adopted, he has even called his mother and talked with her on the phone are games for conducting propaganda against Turkey. .

Mr Denktas said that he informed Mr Clerides that the child was living but told him afterwards that he died. Mr Denktas noted that he did not say that the child was taken to Ankara and added: I think that Clerides might have said that the child had been taken to Ankara in order to divert the family.

[03] HURRIYET on the halloumi cheese issue

Turkish daily HURRIYET newspaper (06.03.70) reports that it became clear that behind the cheese crisis recently started in Cyprus by the Greek Cypriot side, regarding halloumi cheese when the Greek Cypriots wanted to register it in the EU as the regional product, lies the Greek Cypriot fear of losing foreign markets in the face of the Turkish Cypriot interesting marketing tactics.

The paper then reports an incident happened in Saudi Arabia when Turgay Avci the self-styled foreign minister of the regime established in the Turkish occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus, together with a delegation of Turkish Cypriot businessmen met with Saudi businessmen. During the meeting a Saudi Arabian businessman who has supermarket chains in Saudi Arabia said that they are importing from Cyprus halloumi cheese which is very popular in the country and he asked whether this cheese is produced by the Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriot businessmen immediately opened their briefcases and placed their halloumi samples on the table saying: Here it is our cheese. The halloumi cheese is an authentic cheese for Cyprus and it does not belong to the Greek Cypriots only.

The paper goes on and reports that the Saudis noted that the quality of the Turkish Cypriot product is better and less expensive than the one they are buying from the Greek Cypriots and started thinking ways to import halloumi from the Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriot businessmen offered them to send the product via Turkey and thus they concluded export deals with the Saudi businessmen.

The Greek Cypriots in vain tried to stop Turkish Cypriots exporting halloumi to Saudi Arabia. Fearing that they will lose the Arab market to the Turkish Cypriots they have applied to the EU to own the product, HURRIYET concludes.
