[01] Gul says that the world has begun to accept that there are two different languages, religions and democracies in Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (15.01.07) reports that the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Gul has said that they could not follow a policy in Cyprus without taking into consideration the interests of the 73 million population of Turkey.

Addressing a meeting of Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul, Mr Gul replied to those who criticize the AKP government arguing that Cyprus will be lost and many mistakes have been committed.

Mr Gul said that during the AKP period the self-styled TRNC came into a much better position both from the economic and political point of view and as regards its being taken as interlocutor in the world.

By saying yes to the Annan Plan in 2004, the Turks have spoiled a game and exposed the Greek Cypriots, argued Mr Gul and alleged, inter alia, the following: ... Many state administrators have held official meetings with Talat. A situation like a de facto recognition came to surface. Before we had been introvert, talking with ourselves and not being able to explain our rightness. Together with all these, an economic liveliness began. The per capita income has increased more than in Turkey. While all these happened, how do we lose Cyprus? I wonder if army has been withdrawn or territory has been given without us to know it. Turkey has made important changes in its Cyprus policy. The Cyprus policy cannot be carried out without taking into consideration the interest and the future of 73 millions. We have to see the realities. What would happen, if we have not started the negotiations with the EU? We would have continued the privatization again, but the property of the people which we try to sell, would go away not with these prices, but with the one third of these prices. All these would go very cheaply, because no one trusts his money to a country that cannot see the future. Both Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots began to gain. Now the public opinion of the world has begun to accept that there are two different languages, religions and democracies in Cyprus.

[02] Babacan complains because the Cyprus problem is continuously discussed in the EU

Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (15.01.07) reports that Turkey is tired of the fact that the Cyprus problem is continuously kept on the agenda in the international field. The paper writes that Ali Babacan, Turkish Minister of State and Chief negotiator with the EU, has complained from the fact that when the officials of the EU member states meet they always discuss Cyprus, leaving aside other international problems which are more important.

Addressing a meeting of AKP in Istanbul, Mr Babacan said that Cyprus seems to be the most important trouble of Turkey these days and added that the new UN Secretary-General will launch a new initiative for reaching a comprehensive solution under the UN auspices. Mr Babacan alleged that Turkey will not become just the 28th member of the EU, but the member which will have the most right of saying in the Union.

[03] European Commissioner expects EU to launch direct trade with the Turkish Cypriots this month

Ankara Anatolia news agency (13.01.07) reported from Barcelona that Marc Pierini, the head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey, said on Saturday that he expects the EU to launch direct trade with TRNC (Tr. Note: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the illegal regime established by Turkey in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus) in the meeting that will take place on January 22nd.

Taking the floor in the 7th EU-Turkey Seminar on "Reciprocal Images and Mutual Knowledge: From Confrontation to Integration" organized in Barcelona by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, Mr Pierini noted: "This will be the first serious step the EU will take regarding TRNC."

What is important is to "continue negotiations" between Turkey and the EU, stated Mr Pierini.

Turkey faces many problems on road to the EU, but this is an ongoing process, Mr Pierini said.

Mr Pierini pointed out that the so-called Armenian genocide allegations will never be a precondition before Turkey's negotiations with the EU.

[04] A protocol on training construction workers was signed between the occupation regime and Turkey

Ankara Anatolia news agency (12.01.07) reported that Turkish and self-styled TRNC Ministries of Labour and Social Security signed a protocol on Friday to cooperate in training of technicians and workers in the construction sector.

Labour and Social Security Ministers of Turkey and the occupation regime, Murat Basesgioglu and Sonay Adem were in attendance at the signing ceremony.

Mr Basesgioglu said: Under the protocol, 300 TRNC citizens will be trained in Turkey. The Vocational Training and Employment Project will cost about 1.2 million USD. Turkey will continue supporting TRNC's socio-economic development."

Later, Mr Basesgioglu was received by the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, the self-styled Assembly Speaker Fatma Ekenoglu and self-styled Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer.

[05] A CTP delegation visited Lieutenant General Kivrikoglu

According to illegal Bayrak television (12.01.07), a Republican Turkish Party (CTP) delegation led by its General Secretary Omer Kalyoncu paid a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Turkish occupation forces in Cyprus - Lieutenant General Hayri Kivrikoglu on Friday.

Welcoming the CTP delegation, Lieutenant General Kivrikoglu pointed to the existing good relations between the Turkish Occupation Forces and the Turkish Cypriots. He also stressed that it is everyones duty to protect the country, homeland and the flag.

[06] Turkish Cypriot professor says that they have by passed the isolation in the field of education

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.01.07) reports that Dr. Ali Riza Buyukuslu, rector at illegal Lefka European University (LAU), has stated that they have by passed the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots in the field of education.

Buyukuslu made the statement during a tour he held the day before yesterday with journalists in the campus of his illegal university. Noting that they give joint diplomas with universities of France, Germany and Britain, Buyukuslu said: This is not only a struggle of the universities, but also a struggle of increasing the productivity and employment and securing political gains.

Reminding that the population of the occupied area of Cyprus is 220 thousands, Mr Buyukuslu said that the number of the students in the illegal universities reached 40 thousands, that 27 thousands of them come from Turkey and 6-7 thousands from Moslem countries mainly from Northern Africa and Middle East.

Mr Buyukuslu noted that the number of the Moslem students in the occupied areas increased after the 11 September terror attack in the US, as it became more difficult for the students from these countries to study in the US and Britain, because of the terror policy and measures applied after the 9/11 attack.

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (15.01.07) reports that thirteen students who conduct their master education in US Arizona State University have visited the illegal Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU) and participated in a conference on Cyprus and the DAU. According to a statement issued by DAU, the visit and the conference took place upon initiative by the associate professor at Arizona State University, Dr. Gary Grossman.

[07] Egypt, Turkey strike industrial accord to topple China

Under the above title, Ankara Anatolia news agency (12.01.07) reported from Cairo that Egypt and Turkey have agreed to create a special industrial zone to compete with the Chinese production that has already become a threat to the Middle Eastern economy. The industrial zone will be created with an investment of USD2 billion and will cover two million square metres in the Egyptian city of October 6. The works will begin in March, Egypt's Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohammed Rachid and Turkey's Foreign Trade Minister Kursat Tuzmen told a news conference in Cairo.

Tuzmen, who leads a delegation of Turkish lawmakers and 170 entrepreneurs on a visit to Egypt, said that "the signing of the free trade agreement in December 2005 opened new horizons in the bilateral relations and the Turkish investments in Egypt currently stand at $100 million." Tuzmen added that the agreement will allow the two countries to compete with the Asian market, mostly China, as regards quality and price. "The agreement is in no contradiction to the current agreement with the EU, within the Barcelona Process, under which the Mediterranean must become a free trade area by 2010," Rachid said. The Industrial Zone will host 140 factories and the production - chemical products, textile and car parts - will be destined for export mainly to Arab States, the EU and the U.S. The trade between Turkey and Egypt reached $1.1 billion in 2006, up 30% compared to the previous year, and it is expected to reach $5 billion in the next three years.

[08] Former U.S. Ambassador said that Washington will not be a side in the presidential elections in Turkey

According to Turkish daily MILLIYET newspaper (15.01.07), the former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Director of the Turkish Programme at the Brookings Institute Mark Parris, has said that Washington will not be a side in the presidential elections in Turkey to be held this year. He added: The USA will not give any signal as regards Cankaya. It will respect the result of the democratic process. It will astonish me if the President Bush officially supports Tayyip Erdogans candidacy. When asked about the Turkish-American relations in the year 2007, Ambassador Parris said: The management of the Turkish USA relations this year needs more attention than the normal. My transfer to Brookings, seen from this angle, is not coincidence. 2007 will be determinative for the two countries. In the USA it is not properly understood what is going on in Turkey, so I want to establish a forum in the Institute and explain to the USA public Turkeys importance better.

Ambassador Parris answered questions and expressed view on the forthcoming elections in Turkey, the situation in Iraq, the PKK issue and the Armenian genocide issue. He did not say anything about Cyprus.
