[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Matti Vanhanen in Ankara. Gul to host EU Ambassadors after meeting VanhanenTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (01.12.06) reports that intensive diplomatic traffic will take place in Ankara regarding Turkeys EU accession course after the unsuccessful result of the effort exerted by the Finnish term presidency to help Turkey in fulfilling its obligations towards the Union and the recommendation of the European Commission for freezing only eight of the 35 chapters in Turkeys EU accession negotiations. The paper notes that both Prime Minister Erdogan and the chief negotiator Ali Babacan have stressed many times Turkeys determined stance regarding the negotiations process. Mr Erdogan, in statements at Esenboga airport after his return from Riga, said that they have expressed their views on the Cyprus problem and that they will continue to do this. Mr Erdogan argued: If a different suggestion comes from their side (the Europeans) we shall evaluate this different suggestion if it has an aspect which could be evaluated within this framework. If, however, they have not, we have in any case drawn up the framework.Furthermore, Mr Babacan, in statements to the Financial Times newspaper, reiterated the opinion that the Cyprus problem should be left out of Turkeys EU accession negotiations. The Finnish Prime Minister, Matti Vanhanen is visiting Ankara today upon an invitation by Mr Erdogan, reminds the paper, adding that the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gul is expected to have lunch tomorrow with the ambassadors of the EU member countries to Ankara on the occasion of the completion of Mr Vanhanens visit. The recent decision of the European Commission and the future of the negotiations are expected to be discussed during the meeting. Furthermore, the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt is also expected to visit Ankara next week. In addition Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (01.12.06) refers to the issue under the title Shock and worry and writes that the recommendation of the European Commission regarding Turkey caused storms. While the nationalists in Turkey have rebelled against the EU, the Erdogan government set its hopes on the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU which will take place on 11 December. Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (01.12.06) refers to the issue and writes that the recommendation of the European Commission caused strong reactions in Turkey and the occupied areas of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot leader Talat argued that with the decision the demands of the Greek Cypriot side are put as a precondition for Turkeys EU accession course and that this is unacceptable. YENI DUZEN (01.12.06) refers to the issue under the title Everybody is unhappy. OZGUR DUSUNCE (01.12.06) also refers to the issue and reports that the self-styled minister of foreign affairs, Turgay Avci described the recommendation of the European Commission as unfortunate decision and alleged that forcing Turkey to pay the price is wrong. In addition Turkish daily SABAH newspapers (01.12.06) correspondent Fikret Aydemir reports from Brussels regarding behind the scene deliberations following the recommendations of the Commission as regards Turkeys accession process. He reports that the Cyprus government insists on getting a specific date as regards Turkeys opening of its ports to the Cyprus registered ships. (ITs) [02] The Turkish Supreme Military Council dismissed eight air force officersTurkish daily HURRIYET newspaper (01.12.06) reports that the Turkish Supreme Military Council held a meeting yesterday during which the dismissal files of eight air force officers were taken up. The officers are accused of using narcotics.(MHY) [03] Greek and Turkish jets will not come closer to five miles with a view to evading dog fightsTurkish daily HURRIYET newspaper (01.12.06) reports that with a view to evading dog fights between Greek and Turkish fighter jets in the Aegean both sides agreed that the jets will not come closer than five miles to each other. In the past, adds the paper, the jets used to get closer to each other, that is, about 200 meters. HURRIYET claims that this is the result of the visit of the Turkish Chief of the General Staff General Yasar Buyukanit to his Greek counterpart Admiral Chinofotis in Athens.(MHY) [04] A constitutional court decided that it has no authority to issue an order in the lawsuit filed by the DP against the amendment of the internal regulations of the assemblyTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (01.12.06) reports that the so-called constitutional court of the breakaway regime decided yesterday by majority that it has no authority to issue an order in the lawsuit which had been filed by the Democratic Party (DP) against the amendment of the internal regulations of the assembly.Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (01.12.06) reports that in statements during a press conference yesterday, Mr Serdar Denktas criticized the decision of the court and argued that the politics have defeated the state of law. He said that he will not be responsible for the shocking activities which they will conduct as of Monday because of this decision. Mr Denktas accused the self-styled Prime Minister Soyer of being antidemocratic. He also said that his party prepared a file with allegations regarding abuse of authority by Kutlay Erk, former mayor of the occupied part of Nicosia. He noted that this file, which they will give to the government accounting bureau, includes credits of five trillion Turkish liras. Turkish Cypriot CUMHURIYET reports that the accusations of Mr Denktas against Mr Erk were censored by the illegal TAK news agency and Bayrak television. (ITs) [05] Lord Maginnis, member of the House of Lords, called on Prime Minister Blair to lift the unjust flight embargo applied on the TRNCTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (01.12.06) reports that Lord Maginnis, member of the House of Lords, called on the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair to immediately lift the unjust flight embargo and economic isolation applied on the TRNC.He alleged that according to the conclusion he and two other British law experts have reached there is no legal obstacle for the direct flight to the occupied areas of Cyprus. He said that the issue depends on the British government and not the EU and added that the direct flights could start as soon as possible. (ITs) [06] Press report that direct pirate flights already take place from London to the occupied Tymbou airportUnder the title: To be able to fly from London to Ercan, Serhat Incirli, the London correspondent of the Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (01.12.06) reports that the regime in the Turkish occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus, has applied to the British government authorities for permission for direct flights from London to the occupied Tymbou airport. Incirli confirms that there exists such an application and the British authorities are studying it. But he adds, Whether the British authorities give permission or not is a political decision and it is up to London to decide.However, he adds there are already direct flights (Pirate) from London to the occupied Tymbou airport and this is obvious during the summer season. [07] Akinci: With article 22 of the 2nd Area of Kyrenia decree the harmful actions were given a coverTurkish Cypriot daily OZGUR DUSUNCE newspaper (01.12.06) reports that Mustafa Akinci, leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH), said yesterday that with article 22 of the 2nd Area of Kyrenia decree the harmful actions were given a cover and that this article could not be described in another manner. He reminded that the civilian organizations have expressed their disagreement with this article because it opens the door for harmful actions. VATAN reports that the statements of Mr Akinci were made during the discussion of the issue at the assembly. Speaking at the same session, the self-styled minister of internal affairs, Ozkan Murat said that the constructions have not stopped because of the decree.(ITs) [08] Tahsin Ertugruloglu: The dream of a solution with the EU and the United Cyprus is invalidTurkish Cypriot daily GUNES newspaper (01.12.06) reports that Tahsin Ertugruloglu, MP of the National Unity Party (UBP), speaking on behalf of the parliamentary group of the party, stated yesterday during a press conference that the developments show that the dream of a solution with the EU and the United Cyprus is invalid. He argued that the best alternative is the solution of confederation. He alleged that the basis of the new policy should be the TRNC and a structure based on two separate states.(ITs) [09] Kurdish mayor under investigation for preparing computer programme in KurdishTurkish MILLIYET newspaper (30.11.06) reported that Diyarbakir public prosecutor has opened investigation against Sur Mayor, Abdullah Demirbas, for writing a Kurdish computer program called "Ubuntu". According to the MILLIYET report, the program was first introduced in the Sur municipality in English by American programmer Rainer Heider.[B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS[10] Columnist in MILLIYET criticises Mr Erdogan for its reaction to the EU Commission recommendation for Turkey´s refusal to abide by its obligationsUnder the title Where was your mind, Turkish daily MILLIYET newspaper (30.11.06) publishes the following column by Melih Asik:What was done what was expected The EU Commission has partly suspended the negotiations. Prime Minister Erdogan evaluated the decision as unacceptable and described it as unexpected. The EU is burning with desire to take Cyprus. For what? Because many European transport companies are doing business under the flag of the Greek Cypriot ships. Secondly, the EU considers of vital importance for strategic reasons taking over the entire Cyprus and making it an EU soilWe will sayFor the EU, the Cyprus issue carries meanings quite beyond the satisfaction of the Greek Cypriots and Greece Why Cyprus is important for us? Because it is the only gain of the Turkish and the Muslim world from the West in the last 66 years after the settlement of the Hatay (Alexandretta) issue Surrending on the table to the West the island which was secured by war and it is kept by paying great prices for years will cause a shock, the image of Turkey as a strong country will be destroyed What will happen from now on?
