[01] Statements on Cyprus by Kofi Annan in Istanbul

The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has reaffirmed that any solution to the Cyprus Problems could only be solved within the framework of the United Nations.

He said that everyone was aware that he was trying to help find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus Problem in good will.

The UN Secretary-General´s words came during a joint press conference held with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan and the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero at the end of the fourth meeting of the high-level Alliance of Civilizations initiative.

Speaking at the press conference, the UN Secretary-General said that the United Nations continued to provide the only framework and basis for a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

He said that his special representative was currently working with both sides on the island on a series of new confidence building measures aimed eventually at launching a new negotiations process.

Mr Annan said that everyone was well aware that a solution to the Cyprus Problem could only be found under the UN umbrella and that he was trying to help find the best possible solution on the island.

Earlier at the end of his meeting with his Spanish counterpart Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara would only open its ports and seaports if and when the isolation on the `Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus´ is lifted.

He said that attempts to establish links between Turkeys EU membership process and the use of Turkish ports by the Greek Cypriot vessels were in fact not very nice.

Pointing out that his country could face difficulties in its EU membership process as the other candidate countries did he said `our responsibility is to fulfill our obligations in line with EU acquis communitaire`.

Explaining that Turkey had taken some steps on the issue before the 2004 Referenda in Cyprus, he reminded that the Turkish Cypriot Side voted in favor of the Annan Plan while the Greek Cypriot Side rejected it.

Criticizing those trying to create obstacles in the way of Turkeys EU negotiations process, the Turkish Premier expressed the belief that common sense will be the winner on the issue.

Noting that the Cyprus problem was among the topics discussed at the meeting, Mr Erdogan reminded that Spain had given its backing to Turkeys Action Plan on Cyprus and pointed to the importance Ankara attaches to the continuation of constructive and positive approach towards the issue by Spain.

Moreover, Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (14.11.06) reports that the UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan said that he will help his successor to solve the Cyprus problem in the best way and added that he will continue to be interested in the Cyprus problem.

(Tr. Note: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the occupation regime the Turkish Republic has set up in the territories of Cyprus under the occupation of 40,000 Turkish troops).

[02] Mr Talat met with the veterans of the Turkish General Staff who invaded Cyprus in 1974

Welcoming the delegation, Mr Talat said the war veterans who participated in the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus and continued their service after its aftermath, had made big contributions to an event, which has a very important place in the Turkish history.

Mr Talat said that the veterans had made great contributions to the efforts aimed at opening the way for a better future for the Turkish Cypriots.

Mr Talat stressed that the main objective of the Turkish Cypriots is to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem and open the way of EU membership of the whole island, and thus remove the obstacles being created in the way of Turkey in its EU membership process.

Expressing the belief that the world will not continue to keep its doors closed to the Turkish Cypriot people who has a strong desire for peace and had took all the necessary steps towards achieving this objective, he said: `We are on the right way. We will continue our struggle and will surely be successful`.

Speaking also during the visit was the Head of the visiting delegation, the retired Major General Mehmet Yurdakan who expressed the war veterans happiness of being in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as soldiers who had fought 32 years ago to bring peace to the whole island.

Pointing to the importance of acting in cooperation and solidarity, he said the delegation is in the TRNC to prove the fact that they will continue to be by the side of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Later, the delegation met with the self-styled Speaker of the Assembly Fatma Ekenoglu who pointed to the fact that Turkey has always been by the side of the Turkish Cypriot people in its freedom struggle.

Mrs Ekenoglu said that the Turkish Cypriot people gained its freedom thanks to the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus, adding that the operation had also brought peace to the Greek Cypriots.

She also noted that the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of the TRNC is being marked with sorrow to some extent because of the death of the former Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who ordered the Turkish troops to invade Cyprus.

[03] Ali Babacan comments on the Cyprus problem at a panel discussion in Brussels

On the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.11.06) reports that Ali Babacan, Turkeys chief negotiator with the EU, reiterated that they will not make any step in Cyprus. He said: Whatever the cost is, whatever the result is, no step will be made in Cyprus unilaterally. I do not know how I can express this in a stronger manner.

[04] Turkish General to represent the Turkish Armed Forces in the celebrations for the TRNC

General Orhan Yoney who will represent the Turkish Armed Forces at Wednesdays ceremonies marking the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has arrived in the Republic.

General Yoney the Education and Doctrine Commander of the Turkish General Staff was greeted by the Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus Lieutenant General Hayri Kivrikoglu, the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces Major General Mehmet Eroz, deputy-Prime Minister Foreign Minister Turgay Avci and other high ranking commanders and officials.

General Orhan Yoney will be received by President Mehmet Ali Talat tomorrow.

The General will also pay visits to the Speaker of the Parliament Fatma Ekenoglu, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and the first TRNC President Rauf Denktas.

[06] Two Kyrgyz deputies are in the occupied areas for the anniversary of the self-styled TRNC

Two Kyrgyz Deputies - Asgar Aytmatov and Iskender Gayipkulov who are in the Republic for the celebrations marking the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus - paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Prime Minister Foreign Minister Turgay Avci today.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Avci said it is important for the Republic - which has been suffering under an international isolation - to establish closer ties with Turkey and other Turkish Speaking States.

During the visit, the Kyrgyz deputy Asgar Aytmatov pointed to the existence of close and warm relations between the two countries and reminded that the TRNC-Kyrgyz Parliamentary Friendship Group had been established, which opened the way for mutual visits.

Touching upon the Cyprus issue, he said that his country is in support of a settlement on the island based on the political equality of the two sides, stressing the need for the two parties to contribute to the efforts aimed at achieving this goal.

Moreover, Turkish Cypriot daily CUMHURIYET newspaper (14.11.06) reports that Serdar Denktas, chairman of the Democratic Party, met yesterday with Askar Aytmatov and Iskender Gayipkulov, MPs from Kyrgyzstan who are visiting the occupied areas of Cyprus on the occasion of the UDI. Aytmatov said that as the first Kyrgyz citizen who visited the occupied areas of Cyprus 13 years ago, he could see the development in the fields of tourism, economy and the constructions sector. Gayipkulov said that they brought the respect and love of the members of the Kyrgyzstan TRNC Inter-parliamentary Group and informed Denktas about the reforms in his country.

Turkish Cypriot newspaper (14.11.06) KIBRIS reports that the MPs from Kyrgyzstan met also with the self-styled deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs Turgay Avci, who said that they are ready to do whatever they can for the further said development of their relations with Kyrgyzstan. Avci noted that their relations with their brother countries and the support of Turkey gives them power. Avci further that the Turkish Cypriots will sit at the negotiating table for a solution based on the political equality, but meanwhile they will exert efforts to promote their own state.

In addition Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.11.06) reports that according to the Protocol Directorate, 52 foreign guests from 22 countries will participate in the celebrations for the 23rd anniversary of the UDI. The Turkish Foreign Minister Gul will also visit tomorrow the occupied areas within the framework of the celebrations and he will depart the same day.

Feridun Onsav has been appointed by the `Republics Assembly´ as the new `TRNC ombudsman´.

The `ombudsman´ will be in charge of carrying out the duty of investigating citizens complaints of maladministration by `government departments´ and local authorities in the `Republic´.

[13] Multinational giant in massive development

A multinational corporation which owns a chain of luxury hotels has announced its investment in a new holiday development on 100 donums of land on the North Cyprus coast.

The Turtle Bay village Resort near Esentepe (occupied Ayios Amvrosios), due to open next April, will be managed by Hawthorn Hotels and Suites Brand Management whose parent company, US Franchise Systems, also owns the Hyatt group of hotels located in 43 countries around the world.

Developer Savyon Village Limited has struck a deal with Hawthorn Suites to operate the resort, which will boast more than 1,000 bedrooms.

This comprises 408 two-and three-bedroom suites, plus 35 three-and four-bedroom villas with kitchens and living rooms.

The complex will also feature six swimming pools, two tennis courts, a basketball court, gym, business center, convenience store, beauty saloon and mini-golf.

Now potential buyers are being offered a stake in the resort by purchasing the properties as holiday homes, which will be let out to tourists when they are not in residence.

Andrew Wainwright, sales and marketing director of Savyon Village Ltd, said Hawthron would have full operational control of the four-star complex.

We are the first Cypriot-based developer to be associated with the Global Hyatt Corporation and Hawthorn Suites, said Mr Wainwright.

These are the newest trend in vacation home ownership, giving buyers the opportunity to own a luxury vacation home at a renowned resort and receive rent revenue whenever they are not using it.

Owners simply put their apartment or villa into the resort´s rental programme and then Hawthorn Suites take care of renting out the accommodation when it is not in use by the owner.

He said only 150 properties would be included in the rental scheme during the first year.

Mr Wainwright would not disclose the sum involved in the Hawthorn deal but said the newly signed contract would run for 20 years.

John Mavrak, regional president of Hawthorn Hotels and Suites Brand Management, said the company was pleased to be working with Savyon on the project. He added: The Hawthorn resort will offer a great family and leisure destination in an unspoiled location, with numerous water sports activities off Turtle Beach, and with historic sights and entertainment nearby as well.
