[02] Erdogan comments on the Cyprus issue, the Article 301 and the government reshuffle in the occupied areas

Turkish daily HURR0YET newspaper (27.09.06) carries a report on yesterday s speech of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the parliamentary group meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AKP). Commenting on Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, Mr Erdogan said: If legitimate rights and freedoms are curbed in our effort to prevent offensive acts through the implementation of article 301 of the Penal Code, then we will make the necessary amendments to the article.

Touching upon the recent government reshuffle in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Erdogan criticized all those who said that his party and himself have interfered in changes that happened in the government, adding: Everyone talks, everyone writes, everyone types in the computers. But neither my party nor I have any part in this affair. Replying to a question regarding Serdar Denktas remark that the Prime Minister has not called me, Mr Erdogan said: Why should I have? If there was a trouble, you should be the one to call the Prime Minister of the country.

On the same issue, Ankara Anatolia news agency (26.09.06) reports the following:

Referring to the Cyprus issue, Prime Minister Erdogan stated: We said our final word about the Cyprus issue on April 24th, 2004 when Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's plan in the referenda. Although the Greek Cypriot administration rejected the plan, they were awarded with EU membership while Turkish Cypriots were punished.

However, the TRNC has been further progressing day by day. Now, it has become an observer member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) as 'Turkish Cypriot Republic'. Several groups from various countries have begun paying direct visits to the TRNC. A few weeks ago, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan officially invited President Mehmet Ali Talat of the TRNC to his country, he noted.

Commenting on the recent government reshuffle in the TRNC, Mr Erdogan said: Turkish Cypriots will make their own decisions. As Turkey, we only support them. Any intervention is out of question.

[08] Enver Ozturk is reportedly the lawyer of a Turkish company that submitted an application for building a 30-storey hotel in Kerynia

Under the title The lawyer of a company cannot be a minister, Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA (27.09.06) reports that it is said that Enver Ozturk, the newly appointed minister of economy and tourism, is the lawyer of many companies, among which is a company that filed an application in order to build a 30-storey hotel in Kerynia. The paper reports that this plot of land, in a region which is in the east of a place known as Poaltan Palace, had been bought by Zeki Ziya for two million sterling pounds, but the former minister of economy and tourism, Dervis Kemal Deniz opposed to the construction of a 30-storey hotel there. AFRIKA wonders whether or not the information that Mr Ozturk is the lawyer of this investor is true.

It also wonders whether or not the allegation that Mr Ozturk is the lawyer of the businessman named Yahya Kurt is true. According to some allegation, Mr Kurt is, inter alia, the administrator of Oscar Casino and Galaxy betting offices and has close relations with Prime Minister Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP). The paper notes that according to the same information, Kurt is the person who prevented the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat to veto Mr Ozturks appointment to the ministry.
