[01] Statements by Hasan Ercakica with a flurry of accusations against the Greek Cypriot side

Hasan Ercakica, spokesman of the Office of the President of the KKTC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), said that south Cyprus is in close collaboration with terrorist movements aimed against Turkey and that updated information about the activities of the terrorist organization PKK in south Cyprus will be sent to the Office of the Secretary-General of the UN.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing Ercakica commented on PKK activities in the Greek Cypriot sector and said that PKK members and sympathizers organize in south Cyprus under different names, that they engage in activities whenever they desire and whenever they think they are necessary, and that the Cyprus News Agency, which serves as the Greek Cypriot state news agency, reports these activities to the world.

Ercakica recalled that chief separatist Abdullah Ocalan was carrying a "Republic of Cyprus" passport carrying his picture but made out to the name of a Greek Cypriot when he was captured and noted that the Greek Cypriot authorities did not take any action with regard to that situation. Stating that this evidence was reported to the UN Secretary-General in past years, Ercakica said: "Because this issue is now updated, similar evidence will be delivered to UN officials once again after some preparations."

Subtitle: Greek Cypriot-French military cooperation

The KKTC spokesman also commented on quests by the Greek Cypriot administration for military cooperation with France. He described these quests as "attempts by the Greek Cypriot administration to win over France which wants to enhance its ability to intervene in developments unfolding in the Middle East."

Stating that "such attempts by the Greek Cypriot administration must not be rewarded no matter why they are made," Ercakica said that "efforts to gain military means by exploiting problems on a problematic island is unacceptable."

Ercakica said that the Turkish Cypriot side will take the necessary steps on this issue and that President Mehmet Ali Talat will receive the French ambassador in the Greek Cypriot sector tomorrow to ask for official explanations on this matter.

Subtitle: Greek Cypriots misinterpret essence

Commenting on relations with the Greek Cypriot sector, Ercakica said that there are some problems in these relations and that the Greek Cypriot side is misinterpreting the essence of the decisions UN Under Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari announced on 8 July during his visit to the island.

Ercakica said that this situation cannot continue and that for this reason, at this stage, [the Turkish Cypriot side] wants the resolution of problems related to procedure and is working in that direction.

The spokesman said that the Turkish Cypriot side has drafted and submitted to the other side the headings of the issues it wants discussed in technical committees as well as those that are related to the essence of the Cyprus problem. He added that there has not been a reciprocal move from the other side and that, instead, the (Turkish Cypriot side) has encountered subterfuge and untrue statements.

Ercakica underscored that the Maras (occupied Famagusta) issue is not on the agenda of the technical committees. Noting that the Greek Cypriots are working hard to keep the closed area of Maras and the Port of Famagusta on the agenda, Ercakica said: "It needs to be stated once again that Maras is not on the agenda of the technical committees. Indeed, even the Greek Cypriot side has not proposed the inclusion of this issue in the work of the technical committees. In any event we would not have even considered such a proposal. Maras is part of a comprehensive solution and will remain so."

[04] The oil spill in Lebanon is being monitored by the Turkish Maritime Undersecretariat

"There is no pollution in the Turkish urgent intervention responsibility area stemming from the oil spill in Lebanon," the Turkish Maritime Undersecretariat said on Tuesday.

Releasing a statement, the Maritime Undersecretariat said: "The Jiyeh coastal power plant, about 20 kilometers south of Beirut, was damaged on July 13th due to ongoing war in the region causing heavy fuel oil to spill. The Lebanese Ministry of Environment said that nearly 15 thousand tones of oil spilled into the sea."

"A commission was formed under the structure of the Maritime Undersecretariat to monitor all developments to this end. There is no pollution in the Turkish urgent intervention responsibility area stemming from the oil spill in Lebanon so far," it added.

[05] Six agreements signed between Turkey and Saudi Arabia

Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer met on Tuesday King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

King Abdullah is currently paying a state visit to Turkey.

Following the meeting, they signed six agreements envisaging development of cooperation between the two countries.

Those agreements are: The understanding of memorandum about political consultations between Turkish and Saudi Arabian ministries of Foreign Affairs; the cooperation protocol between Turkish Prime Ministry Directorate General for State Archives and Saudi Arabian Center of National Archive and Documents; the agreement for mutual encouragement and protection of investments; the understanding of memorandum about agreement for prevention of double taxation; the cooperation agreement between Turkish and Saudi Arabian ministries of health; and the cooperation agreement for transportation.

King Abdullah will receive Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan later in the day.

He will also partake in a banquet to be hosted in his honor by President Sezer. King Abdullah is expected to proceed to Istanbul tomorrow.

[06] YENIDUZEN: Increase in dispatching of goods from north to south

The paper gives the break down of the items sold to the south for each month, starting from January 2006 up to July 2006. The paper further reports that every passing day the amount of goods as well as the variety of goods are increasing.

[07] The 51st political party was established in Turkey

The party's petition of establishment was submitted to the General Secretariat of the Interior Ministry by former parliamentarian and governor Mahmut Yilbas. Mahmut Yilbas, who served as a parliamentary deputy during the 20th session for both the DTP (Democratic Turkey Party) and the DYP (True Path Party), presented the party's petition of establishment to Interior Ministry General Secretary Sami Bulut.

Yilbas, in a statement he made upon departing the ministry, said that, by obtaining the establishment documentation, they were entering into political life as Turkey's 51st party. Noting that citizens "are wondering why there is a need for a new party when there are already so many parties", Yilbas asserted that the political parties that had been previously established in Turkish political life, as well as those that had been added later, have been inadequate in terms of finding solutions to Turkey's problems.

Included among the founders of the party are former governor Kutlay Okten, former Ankara University Rector Unal Akbay, former Civilian Administration Chief Sener Can, and Ankara Bar Association attorney Gulden Turegun.
