[01] The chairman of the Turkish Cypriot building contractors argues that Garry Robbs return to occupied Cyprus was inevitable because his property is looted

Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (09.05.06) reports that the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Union of Building Contractors, Cafer Gurcafer has said that some people looted the property of Gary Robb, partner in the real estate company AGA Developments, accused of swindling thousands of pounds from company funds, in the occupied part of Cyprus. Some persons, whom he described powers of the darkness embezzled millions of dollars and therefore Mr Robbs return to the occupied areas was inevitable, alleged Mr Gurcafer.

He said that he has no partnership or cooperation with the AGA Development and that he is only one of the directors of the company being an observer in the capacity as the chairman of the Building Contractors Union having the approval of the state.

Mr Gurcafer noted that they interfered into the issue so that the unfinished constructions of AGA Development in Kyrenia area are completed and transferred to their owners.

Mr Gurcafer said that these powers of the darkness put a fire to his office and his car. The paper writes that Mr Gurcafer did not explain who are these powers of the darkness and calls on him to do so.

Turkish Cypriot daily GUNES newspaper (09.05.06) reports that referring to the return of Garry Robb to the occupied area of Cyprus, the chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP), Huseyin Ozgurgun said yesterday during a visit to Karpass peninsula: When a person who had swindled millions of dollars and run away abroad, returned to the country, a minister went, took him away the hands of the police and helped him in entering into the country. This is not possible. The way of how the country is administrated is obvious from the actions that take place and the relations which are established.

Turkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (09.05.06) reports that the situation regarding who will pay for the completion of the constructions of the AGA Development which remained unfinished and which company will undertake to complete this job, remain dark.

[03] Crisis between Turkey, France and Canada over the Armenian genocide

Ankara Anatolia news agency (08.05.06) reports the following from Ankara:

Turkey has called its ambassadors in French capital of Paris and Canadian capital of Ottawa back to have consultations regarding the so-called Armenian genocide discussions in these countries, Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan said on Monday.

Mr Tan told reporters that Turkey's Ambassador to France Osman Koruturk and Ambassador to Canada Aydemir Erman have been called to Ankara for a short time to have consultations on recent baseless Armenian genocide allegations in these two countries.

The two ambassadors are expected to return to the countries where they are assigned to, after these consultations, he added.

The Canadian parliament has adopted a resolution, acknowledging the Armenian claims, while Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made remarks in which he qualified unfounded Armenian allegations as "genocide".

On the other hand, the French parliament will debate a bill on May 18th which makes any rejection of the so-called Armenian genocide a crime.

[04] Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc leaves for Sweden

The New Anatolian newspaper (08.05.06) reports that the Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc left for Sweden on Sunday amid controversy between the two countries on pro-Kurdish Roj-TV which Turkey wants banned in Europe.

Mr Arinc's visit is at the invitation of Swedish Parliament Speaker Bjorn Von Sydow. "I believe that close relations between the two and cooperation in the context of the European Union accession process will be further strengthened," Arinc said before he departed. He's scheduled to meet representatives of the Turkish community in Sweden and attend dinner to be hosted in his honor by Turkish Ambassador to Sweden Necip Eguz.

His contacts will include Stockholm Mayor Barry Andersson, Swedish government officials, Parliament Speaker Von Sydow, and Swedish-Turkish Friendship Group Chair Goran Lindbland. He will also have talks with members of the Swedish Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission, address the Swedish Parliament and participate in a reception to be hosted by Von Sydow on Tuesday. Mr Arinc will also be received by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and meet Deputy Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm the same day.

The high-level visit comes a day after the Turkish authorities announced that they've asked Stockholm for information after learning that Danish-based Roj-TV has been broadcasting through cable and pay TV in Sweden.

Turkish Foreign Ministry sources told an Anatolia news agency correspondent on Saturday that Turkey has asked the Swedish Foreign Ministry -- through officials at the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm -- for information on the matter. According to sources, Turkish Ambassador in Stockholm Necip Eguz has informed the Swedish authorities that unless the broadcasts by Roj-TV stop, Turkey will launch all sorts of initiatives.

Turkey has sent all documents and information regarding Roj-TV, which broadcasts programs encouraging, supporting and directing the terrorist Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), to the Danish authorities and other relevant countries seeking the closure of the TV channel.

Press reports have indicated that Sweden has allowed the channel to broadcast although it recently closed down a website belonging to Chechen separatists following a complaint from Russia.

    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[08] Columnist in AFRIKA comments on Mr Talat´s latest statements

Under the title Comment on Mr Talat´s statements Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (09.05.06) publishes a commentary by Serhat Incirli, in the column Letter from London.

Following are excerpts of the commentary:

Mehmet Ali Talat spoke to one of our friends from YENIDUZEN Odul AsikA talk face to face Talat put his fingers on two important changes, more correctly two very important changes from his point of view.

First, that in Cyprus there are two peoples. Second, Turkey has not the slightest responsibility for the non-solution!

In the past neither Talat nor the CTP, (Talat´s Republican Turkish Party), were approaching into these two basic issues of the Cyprus problem from this point of view. In the past they used to beat people who were saying that there were two peoples in Cyprus. But now they themselves say two peoples because two peoples in Cyprus mean two separate states. In fact Talat in his interview conveys the message of two states by saying let us strengthen it, let us develop it etc He is going further than that and urges removal of the isolations which is tantamount to recognition. And this emanates from his demand two peoples two separate states.

It is very clear that Mr. Talat is going through a very serious metamorphosis of becoming like Denktas. He no more favors a unification of Cyprus under a federal solution.

Mr. Incirli in a detailed analysis justifies President Tassos Papadopouloss conviction that the Turkish Cypriots are ruled by Turkey. Mr. Incirli goes on and asks Talat: For heavens sake my esteemed brother Talat, are you serious when you speak about this issue Is there a people called Turkish Cypriot? Is it possible that this people could hold elections without Turkeys intervention? What you do by asking removal of isolations in fact you are asking for recognition. Asking for removal of isolations is veiled asking for recognition. Mr. Denktas was asking this openly, you are asking for it in a covered manner.

Mr. Incirli concludes by saying: Did Denktas ask for something different? Did Denktas wish for something else?

Let us decide, who are imposing isolations on us? Let us have the power to criticize Turkey, to try or at least to condemn her a little bit in our statements and then to sit and boast about. It is good that you claim that you are the elected President but what about your powers which are not more than the powers and the authority of the Turkish Ambassador and the Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces in the TRNC. Dont you think that people might ask you this? Or dont you want people to ask you this?

*(TR. Note: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is the illegal regime set up by the Turkish Republic in the occupied by 40,000 Turkish troops northern part of the Republic of Cyprus. The Turkish troops invaded Cyprus in 1974 and killed 1% of the Greek Cypriot population, forced 200,000 Greek Cypriots at gun point to abandon their homes, properties and personal belongings, which they initially looted and subsequently started selling to foreigners, mainly British, in violation of the international law and all the principles of Human Rights).

[09] Have the British who bought stolen Greek Cypriot properties served their purpose? Judge for yourself

Under the title Have we served our purpose? Judge for yourself, Turkish Cypriot CYPRUS TODAY (06-14.05.06) publishes the following letter by Marian Stokes, Chairman of the Homebuyers Pressure Group in the column Views Letters:

The Homebuyers´ Pressure Group was initially set up with three main aims

To do something constructive to correct all existing problems and to ensure that building laws and purchasers´ rights are tighter in the future. To achieve this aim they would prepare a database of all property problems and approach the government to ensure that there is accountability on the wrongdoer´s side and to enact some laws for the future that protect the foreign purchaser.

To get some background on how these problems had arisen, thereby preventing future buyers falling into the same trap.

By achieving both of the above to create global (especially European) positive awareness of the world isolation of the TRNC. Also to reduce the fodder for the Greek propaganda machine and maybe give something back to the Turkish Cypriots who have mostly welcomed foreign investors´ presence here.

Have they achieved any of these aims in their eight months existence?

They have gathered their information, lobbied their case, put very strong recommendations to the government and now, slowly, changes are at least being proposed which should, in the very near future, offer protection to foreigners investing in property in the TRNC. CYPRUS TODAY outlined some of these in a front-page article Sweeping reforms to protect property buyers (April 8-14).

Is this enough? No, but at the very least awareness has been created of the potential problems, despite which, mainly due to lack of proper factual information and bullying tactics by some estate agents, thousands of foreigners have bought permanent and holiday homes in the last few years. These are the people that are now coming together under the banner of the Homebuyers´ Pressure Group and demanding justice for shoddy practices.

Due to the Homebuyers´ Pressure Group having the courage to take a stance against wrongdoers there is now plenty of information available to enable all new property investors to make value decisions regarding their purchase. The best piece of advice they offer these people is don´t leave your brains behind when you land on this beautiful island, leave your heart instead.

The Homebuyers´ Pressure Group holds general meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. Admission is free, registration with the group is free and everyone is welcome whether you are an existing member, a person experiencing problems with your purchase, you intend buying a property or you are just nosy.
