[01] The Turkish and Turkish Cypriot Press on the direct flight from illegal Tympou airport to Baku

The direct flight conducted yesterday from illegal Tympou airport to the capital of Azerbaijan Baku, is covered widely in todays (30.08.05) Turkish and Turkish Cypriot newspapers and other mass media.

Turkish Cypriot KIBRIS newspaper reports that the Turkish Cypriot delegation arrived at Baku yesterday morning with a plane of the so-called Turkish Cypriot airlines. The paper notes that the visit is considered very important for the lifting of the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots and the starting of direct flights from occupied Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper writes that the first direct flight conducted yesterday to another country except Turkey ended up to be a fiasco. The paper quotes the so-called minister of foreign affairs Serdar Denktas who stated that the visit was conducted upon an invitation addressed to the Denktas family. The paper also notes that the Turkish Cypriot delegation was accepted in a simple ceremony and that all the passengers, including the VIPs were carried from the plane to the VIP room squeezed in a bus. According to HALKIN SESI, no meeting with officials will take place during the visit despite announcements made that the delegation will meet with the State Minister of Azerbaijan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On the other hand Turkish Cypriot CUMHURIYET supports that political contacts will take place during the visit of the Turkish Cypriot delegation in Azerbaijan and notes that the Turkish Cypriot businessmen will sign cooperation protocols with Azeri businessmen.

The editor-in-chief of YENI DUZEN newspaper Cenk Mutluyakali criticises the visit and writes in his column that Denktas familys trip to Azerbaijan cost 62 thousand dollars.

Turkish MILLIYET newspaper writes that Rauf Denktas was among the Turkish Cypriots who participated in the delegation that is visiting Azerbaijan and notes that the former Turkish Cypriot leader and all the other Turkish Cypriots entered Azerbaijan using TRNC passports. The paper also writes that Rauf Denktas wife Aydin Denktas, along with his daughters and grandchildren also went to Azerbaijan in the same flight.

Turkish HURRIYET writes about the direct flight and notes that the Turkish Cypriot delegation and especially Rauf Denktas were received warmly, however the Azeri officials that welcomed the Turkish Cypriots at the airport were the State Minister Nazim Ibrahimova, the Turkish ambassador to Baku, Turan Morali, the pseudo states representative to Azerbaijan Mustafa Evran and the chairman of the Turkish-Azerbaijan businessmen union Ahmet Erentok.

In addition as NTV television broadcast (29.08.05) the visit to Baku was conducted upon an invitation the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed to Rauf Denktas. It was reported that the visit will be an expression of support for Ilham Aliyev on the eve of the November elections, and that the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) of Mehmet Ali Talat is opposed to the portrayal of Rauf Denktas' visit as the first direct flight from the pseudostate. RTP officials pointed out that Denktas was going to Azerbaijan on a special flight, and that the announcement that this would be the first flight to a country outside Turkey is not going to help lift the isolation.

[02] An IRSA system will be established in the occupied area of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (30/08/05) reported that the so-called Minister of Interior Ozkan Murat met yesterday with the Chairman of the International Road Security Academy (IRSA), Peter Termeulen. The Director of Romania IRSA, Dana Voice, the Chairman of the Association of Prevention of Traffic Accidents, Mehmet Avci and some officials of the ministry also participated in the meeting.

Mr Murat said that a protocol was signed between the Ministry and the IRSA, in order to establish an IRSA system in the occupied area of Cyprus. On his behalf, Mr Termeulen said that he will give the necessary help, so that a local IRSA system will be created in the occupied area of Cyprus. He also added that the academy will apply in the occupied area the same system that is applied also in Romania.

[03] The flag of the pseudostate was hoisted on the Greek Cypriot school in the occupied village of Rizokarpasso

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (30/08/05), under the title The enigma of flag in Rizokarpasso, reports that the occupation police is searching for those who raised the flags of Turkey and the pseudostate on the building of the Greek Cypriot elementary and high school in the occupied village of Rizokarpasso. The incident caused anxiety in the village. The so-called Ministry of Education warned those who want to create chaos to be careful.

According to the paper, the Turkish Cypriot inhabitants of the occupied village of Rizokarpasso started for some time now the complaints that there were no flags of the pseudostate or Turkish flags on the Greek Cypriot schools in Rizokarpasso, as there are in all Turkish schools in the occupied area of Cyprus, which are registered with the so-called Ministry of Education.

The so-called Mayor of Rizokarpasso Arif Ozbayrak sent also a letter some time ago to the so-called Ministry of Education and Culture asking not only to raise the Turkish flag and the flag of the pseudostate at the Greek Cypriot schools, but also to put Ataturks bust in front of the school. He also warned the occupation authorities that if this does not happen, it may create a crisis.

On the 25th of August, the Turkish flag and the flag of the pseudostate were raised on the Greek Cypriot schools. The occupation police removed immediately the flags by saying that those who raised them did no have permission, and that this incident could create a new chaos.

[04] Turkey and the pseudostate signed a co-operation protocol in the education field

Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (30.08.05) reports that Turkey and the pseudostate signed a co-operation protocol in the fields of education, science and technology.

The protocol was signed yesterday in Ankara by the Turkish Minister of Education Mr Huseyin Celik and the so-called minister of education and culture of the occupation regime Mrs Canan Oztoprak.

The Protocol, which contains 26 articles, provides for co-operation in the primary, secondary, technical and private education. According to a parameter of the new Protocol, it would be possible for Turkish Cypriot teachers to be employed in Turkey.

[05] Turkey´s Victory Day to be celebrated in the occupied by Turkish troops part of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot Cyprus Times newspaper (30/08/05) reports the following:

Today´s 83rd anniversary of Turkey´s Victory Day, will be marked with ceremonies here in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus).

The day marks the 83rd anniversary of the victory of Turkish Forces over invading multi-national forces that had slammed into Turkish mainland during the World War I. The victory of Turkish Forces under the Command of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk spelled the end of the Turkish War of Liberation which had paved the way for the Declaration of the modern Turkish Republic, about a year later.

TRNC and Turkish Flags were hoisted at all government offices from yesterday, and today´s anniversary of the day is to see government and semi-government departments closed for a day, to honour the occasion.

The military victory´s anniversary celebrations will begin with the Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus Lieutenant General Hasan Memisoglu receiving well-wishers at the Lefkosia Regimental headquarters. There will also be ceremonies in other towns and local military headquarters across the TRNC.

[06] Ozkan Murat arrogantly declares that nobody´s power will be enough to rescind the title deeds issued by the occupation regime for the stolen properties of European citizens

In a clear show of arrogance deriving from the pressure of 40,000 fully equipped Turkish troops and the indifference of the international community over the flagrant violation of the human rights of EU citizens, the so-called Minister of Interior of Ankaras puppet regime in occupied EU territory, Mr Ozkan Murat, said: Nobodys power will be enough to rescind our title deeds.

Turkish Cypriot Kibrisli newspaper (29/08/05) publishes Mr Murat´s statements under banner headlines in its front page.

Mr Ozkan Murat made it clear that all the rumours deliberately being spread that the government was considering the cancellation of title deeds given for former Greek Cypriot property were unfounded and nothing but speculation. The Minister, being the most authorized person in the TRNC on this particular subject, said that the government, the ministers and other official body in TRNC were bound by the TRNC Constitution, rule and regulations.

Murat underlined that title deeds granted to citizens and residents are part of the internal legal system, and that there is absolutely nothing politicians could do to change this even if they wanted to. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Constitution and the relevant laws are clear. There are no loopholes for this and most important of all there is no intention. So I advise property owners of those who are in the process of purchasing to calm and be confident, he said.

When there is a solution in the future of course there will be some arrangements made about former Greek Cypriot Property, but today´s position and the situation when a solution in Cyprus will be found should not be mixed up with each other, he added.

Asked about rumours suggesting that the Turkish Government asked the TRNC Government to make some adjustments in order to avoid rulings against it in the European Court of Human Rights, Murat rejected the allegations outright saying, Absolutely not, writes the paper.

Regarding the problems faced by foreigners, mainly British, who bought properties of the Greek Cypriots who were murdered or were forced by the Turkish army to abandon them, the paper writes:

Minister Murat said that he met with a committee formed from the expat community and chaired the first hour of the meeting himself before handing it over to his undersecretary.

At this meeting, which I can describe as very productive, we primarily agreed to work in collaboration with the representatives of the community in order to first establish the main problems they are facing and then they have not only been noted, but that the Ministry Undersecretary has been given directives to solve these as soon as possible. These problems mostly come under the topics of residency permit problems and problems while trying to buy property.

These two issues are dealt with in the Interior Ministry so I am responsible. I can assure the community that I am on the ball.

    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[07] Turkish Cypriot columnist describes as chauvinistic the statements of the Turkish Cypriot leadership regarding the illegal title deeds for the occupied Greek Cypriot properties

Writing in Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (30.08.05), Ali Osman describes as chauvinistic the statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, the so-called Prime Minster, Ferdi Sabit Soyer and the so-called Minister of Interior of the occupation regime, Ozkan Murat regarding the issue of the illegal title deeds for the occupied Greek Cypriot properties distributed by the regime to Turkish Cypriots and settlers from Turkey, as well as foreigners.

Under the title They will force the Turkish Cypriots to come last! Mr Osman writes the following:

Today is 30 August. The TRNC officials will take again their place among the generals and sit tightening their hand between their legs. Tanks will pass from the avenues and soldiers will march. As you understand the militarism will show itself off. And our people will feel proud about it. I do not know if they will say let Papadopoulos come and see who is ruling here, but the statement made two days ago by Ozkan Murat is not more unimportant than the chauvinistic statements of Talat, Ferdi and the others. They are even more important, because they are on the properties, the most sensitive point of the Cyprus problem.

No one has the right to annul the title deeds, says Mr Ozkan. He is right. He is right, but which power controls the construction of buildings on the properties which have title deeds of the Republic of Cyprus, the buying and selling of these properties and giving them away as if they were its own? Mr Ozkan, who has taken properties belonging to others and without permission gave them to be used, who have buildings constructed on them and who is the initiator of deriving profit from them, upon which power is he relying and he is becoming strong as a lion?

One part of Pergamos village is in the area of the (British) bases and the other is under Turkish control. The officials of the British bases have so far not created any problem for those living there. During the past few days, some families are facing a big problem. The issue is a problem with the title deeds and Ozkan Murat, who gave the fetwa (Translators note: Fetwa is muftis opinion on a matter involving Islamic religious law) the title deeds cannot be annulled, also knows about it. The size of the properties left to the citizens living in Pergamos from the fathers, have been changed by the officials of the TRNC Land Survey Department. The plots of land have been made smaller. In spite of the fact that it has been said that there was a measuring mistake, this mistake has somehow not been corrected. And others have built a house on the land belonging to those persons saying that this is a hali land. Now the issue has been taken to court. The citizen posseses, in parallel with the old and the new title deed he took from the Republic of Cyprus, a title deed given to him by the authorities of the TRNC.

The government of the TRNC has also decided to nationalize a part of this land which is in the area of the Bases. Do they not say that you cannot stop doing something to which you have been accustomed to? This is valid for them as well. The earning that they ensured on the Greek Cypriot properties in the north was not enough for the TRNC officials. Now they long to possess the land of the British Bases. Even if the court buys this, will the officials of the British Bases buy it? .
